Melbourne, Jan. 12. Arrived, last night—Waihora, Great bush fires are now raging in the neighborhood of Dpnilujoin, Portland, Tatura, and Condah. Jan. 13. The total imports of Victoria during the last twelve months amounted to £18,500,000, and exports , to, £11,800,000, including £2,000,000 of gold specie, Messrs Goldsborougb, in their weekly report, confirm their previous estimate that the surplus of the Victorian wheat crop will amount to 150,000 tons, which will be, available for export.’ The Hon. Jas. Bell and the Hon, J. L. Dow (Minister of Lands) will temporarily replace Mr Deakin as Commissioner of Water-Supply, Mr Davis will occupy the position of Chief Secretary. Mr Bell also undertakes the position of Minister of Defence in the absence of Mr Lorimer. Frederick Kempster, one of the smallpox patients at the quarantine station, died to-day. The Australian Mutual Shipping Company has been successfully formed, itßjobjeet being to oppose the London shipping ring. Sydney, Jan. 12. Mr Dibbs forwarded his resignation to the Governor to-day, ignoring the fact that Sir Patrick Jennings tendered the resignation of bis Ministry as a whole. It is considered donbtfn) whether Lord Carrington will accept the resignation, of the Ministry, though nothing further is yet known. No fresh cases of smallpox bare been reported , at the quarantine station. Some of the patients, however, are in a critical condition. Altogether, six deaths have occurred since the outbreak. Later, Four deaths, have occurred at the quarantine station this afternoon. Several other patients are in a critical oonditioa. The men arrested .in connection with the Newtown outrage were brought up at the Police Court to-day* and remanded for a week, Hutchins, the English pedestrian, has beaten the best Australian record for 50 yards. Jan. 18. Arrived—Zealandia, Sailed, this afternoon—Rotomahana, for Auckland. Adelaide, Jan. 12. The warden at I’eetulpa reports that many of the men are. turning their attention to reefs, as washing results are poor, Hobart, Jan. 13. Messrs Hazel and Hoigkins, delegates from the London Emigration Bureau, leave here to-day for New Zealand.
Brisbane, Jan.: 12. Government has declined to immigration, on the ground that doing bo would interfere with the prosecution of public works, which would thus increase the number of unemployed In-the colony. 1
