London, : " Jan. 6. Thp Conservatives nre tnkrtig grave objections to the overtures made by the Whigs. Mr Edward Stanhope has accepted the portfolio ot Secretary of State for War in the Salisbury Ministry. The Standard of to-day states that Mr Gladstone is inclined to modify his Home Rule for Ireland scheme, with a view to conciliate the Unionist Liberals. Jan. 7. Karl Morley is mentioned as likely to succeed Mr Stanhope as Secretary of State for the Colonies. The Standard states that Mr Gladstone is willing that the powers of his pro['o»fd Irish Parliament should be confined to dealing with certain specified subjects. Jan. 8. It is announced tint Lord Cross has reconsidered his decision to resign, and consented to retain the position of Secretary of State for India. It is stated that Earl Carnarvon will succeed Mr B. Stsnhope as Secretary of State for the Colonies. Jan. 9. It is announced Ihs t Lord Salisbury will replace Earl Iddesleigh as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. It ha 3 not yet been decided who is to succeed Mr Edward Stanhope as Secretary of State f«,r the Colonics. Earl Cadogan has been mentioned as likely to accept-that portfolio. The Daily News yesterday published an article denying the statement made by the Standard that Mr Gladstone is inclined to modify his Home Rule for Ireland scheme with the view of conciliating the Unionist Liberals.
