TEMUKA TOWN BOARD.

Thfl monthly meet'ng of the Temuka Town Board was held last evening. Present Messrs Blyth, Mason, Brown and Ooira. In the absence of Mr Gray, Mr Blylh was voted to the chair. MINUTES. The minutes of ihe tast meeting were read and confirmed. OVEBSEEK'S REPORT. The Overseer reported th*t since last meeting only one man had been employed during the past month 8h days cleaning out w4or-table3, with the exception of the Oerk of Works, vvhobad been superintending the concrete kerbing f r \f days. fortnight. He had heard several complaints about the lamps not being lit, and on the 30th he personally eaw they were not l't, although the night was \ery dark. "He could not Bay of his o*n knowledge* that they were not lit on other nights complained of. The balance in the Bank last Board day was £202 5b 9d, and it was now £179 Bsßd. The Ranitary condition of the town was satisfactory. A discussion took place oo that part of the report refeiring to the lighting of the lamps. The Chairman said he had heard complaints. The conditions , should have been more stringent. It should have been provided that the 25 per cent kept in hand by the Board should be forfeited if the work was not properly done. Mr Brown said that if the night was dark before 10 o'clock the limps should be lit.

Mr Mason said the lamplighter had often been spoken to, but he bad done no better. The broken glass on the lamp at the corner had never been removed. The contractor might have taken the work too cheap, but if so he: should have said so, and given the Board notice that he vrould give it up. The Board could not help it if he bad taken the work at too low a rate. He had had many complaints made to him, and he would move—'.'That the lumplighter bo given one month's notice, of the termination of bis contract, and that fresh tenders be called for lighting the lampß for twelve months."

Mr Brown bore testimony to the careless way in. which the latnplighteir had done his work, and said that ratepayers had very frequently complained to him. He would second the motion. The Chairman said he had beard complaints, and Mr Ooira having spoken to the same effect, the motion was curried unanimously.

It was decided that the conditions should be made more stringent, so that If the next contractor fails to carry out his contract properly the 25 per cent wlli be forfeited.

It was decided to defer the calling for tenders for filling in the footpath on the Main road till the kerbing was completed. RAILWAY TERRACE.

It was remarked that when the footpath was filled up in Kail way Terrace it might displace the kerbing, and! the Overseer ft as instructed, if he finds it necessary, to let by tender privately the work of providing sufficient shingle to back up the kerbing in the water tables, and to call for tenders for shingling the road 8; tenders to be in by next Board day. TENDERS. Tenders for contract No 17, filling in footpath and shingling same, were opened and considered : W. Lewis, £l3 Os 8d ; H. Elkis, £ls 5s ; Thos. Oleary, £2O 10». The tender of Mr Lewis was accepted. A FAULTY FOOTPArH. Mr Ooira wanted to know whether anything could be done with the bole in front of the Postoflice.

Mr Brown said it was an eyesore ; something ought to be done.

The Town Clerk said the last Jot of work had sunk down some feet and he had thought of trying cement. Members agreed that it would be as well to try cement, and the Clark was authorised to get some cement from the contractor for the kerbing and have the hole filled up.

Accounts to the amount of £24 113 s 8d were passed for payment and the meeting terminated.
