THE NEW ZEALAND CROSS.
The Governor presented the New Zetland cross to Lieut*Colonel McDonnell at Government House, Wellington, yesterday morning, in the presence of the Hons. BuokJ®7» = Tole, Larnaoh, Major-General, Whitmore, and garrison - officers. His Excellency .made . a brief speech explaining that the cross had been instituted at Sir G. Whitmore’a instance, ! and by. the Quoen’s special order. It ranked with, and next after, the Yictoria Cross, being the only similar cross in the Empire, He read from & Gazette proclamation of the deeds for which 'Colonel .McDonnell was awarded the decoration, particularly his reconnaißa,hoe with Major Yon Tempsky at Pararatu, in the Waikato, in 1864. Colonel McDonnell said that be felt he bad obtained the cross after such a length of time through the kindness of Mr Ballance, and other members of the present Government, and owing ;to the persistent recommendations of his oid oonimandera, Generate Cameron and Chute. He expressed sorrow that his old friend, the gallant Yon Tempskey, was not by'hie side to receive the full, share of. honor he deserved by : 'a?,.similar ’declaration. He Idid not appreciate the award less by having had to wait eo long, and thanked hie Expediency and thoie present for the honor they bsd jdnnji hbu. This concluded the proceedings, fhe.orqss w|9 pppojally. made in England, and is an extremely handsome, decoration. In shape it is ' similar to the Victoria Cross, but the material is silver instead of gun metal, and each rgy of the cross has a gold star on it.; In the centre ie a gold wreath, “ New Zealand." The Governor's statemsnt as to the value of the cross will probably be' news to most colonists. There are only 18 holders'in New Zealand. The {decoration carries £lO a year with it.
