The Chamber of Manufacturers has < approved of the proposed Exhibition. . It is intended to invite their Royal, Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales to the inauguration ceremony in connection with the centennial Exhibition in 1888. The preliminary arrangements for the Exhibition are being v rapidly pushed forward. The space allotted will largely exceed the total of 1880. A Commissioner will be appointed in both Melbourne and London. Government have received a telegram from the Agents-General, collectively, Stating that the basis of the Imperial Institute has been remodelled. The Government have received a telegram from the Agent-General in London stating that the Secretary for the Colonies intimated to him that the Imperial Government deemed it unnecessary that a British sovereignity be proclaimed over New Guinea, as the defence of that country is adequately ‘ secured by the protectorate. The Hon. E. Stanhope farther stated that if annexation takes place, and protection is required, the colonies must hud the necessary expenditure.
