The following circular has bean sent to the Chairmen of Chamber* of Commerce in the colony by Sir Robert Stout “ I have the honour to request you will be good enough to bring under tbe consideration of your Chamber the deiirability of promoting commercial interoourie between the Dominion of Canada and this colony. I have recently addressed the Canadian Premier on the subject, asking that communication may be opened up with some of the merohanti of the Dominion as to tbe exchange of commodities, and pointing out that our import* from New York and' Boiton for 1885, amennted to £366,873, and consisted of goods some of which probably could as easily have been tent to ns from Canada. I enclose copy of return* ihowing there import*. Oar exports to the States mentioned are, with the exception kauri gum, at preeent almost nil, and it might be a question for onr Chambers to consider what could be dona in the way of fostering trade with both America and Canada that would be of advantage to NawZealaud.” In a letter to the Canadian Government, the Premier inquries whether there is a market fir onr wool; also refers to the question of having a cable laid from British Columbia to New Zealand, and thence to Queensland, and gee* on to eay—" We have refund to continue to pay a subsidy to the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company for their cable between here and Australia, as wa are in hop* that some.arrangement* may be made that will lead to laying a Pacific Cable.”
