SOUTH CANTERBURY BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Board of Education was held on Thursday. Present Messrs S, W. Goldsmith (Chairman), Howell, Jackson, Dr Fester, and the Revs. G, Barclay and Jasper-Smyth. The Chairman stated that since the last meeting he had to report the death of Mr G. JB. Turnbull, head master of the Geraldine School, who was universally esteemed in the district, and whose death would prove a great loss to the Board, Miss Hamilton, of the Geraldine School, had sent in her resignation, and vacancies had to be filled up in the Waimate, Mount Gay, and Opihi Schools. He had temporarily appointed Mr Valentine to the Waituna Creek School, and Mr George Steven to the Orari Bridge School. There is a vacancy in the Milford School which will require to be filled up and one in the Timaru school. lie had appointed Mr George Hislop as locum Unent at the Geraldine school. Correspondence was then dealt with, the following affecting this district From the Government, informing the Board that the building grant of £1843 would be placed to the credit of the Board at the end of the year. hrom the Gapes’ Valley Committee, asking that the school porch be completed.—£s was granted. From the Rangitata Station Committee, asking that the enlargement of the school be done at Christmas time.—Tenders to be called for. From Mr William King, in reference to leasing the Board’s reserves at Geraldine. —Tenders for lease to be invited. From Messrs Dunlop and Aitkins, asking that a certain amount ba paid out of the late Mr Turnbull’s estate to defray the necessary funeral expenses.—Granted.
From the Temuka Committee, applying for a grant for necessary repairs, ventilators, etc., and that the wills of the school should be distempered. —Secretary to write for further particulars. The architect reported as follows: With respect to the Rev. Geo-ga Barclay's question as to the means taken by me of judging the quality of concrete that I do not actually see mixed, but that I can see when set, my professional experience enables me to judge correctly at sight. But I cannot, of course, so judge of .work or material which has been done or used between my visits, and hidden by other work in the course of construction. My long experience enables use to judge of the work by the eye or touch, but of what is done in my absence I cannot judge if it is covered by other work in progress, and I do not grant certificates for payment for work which is not satisfactorily performed.”—The architect’s reply was considered satisfactory. _ The Inspector reported that during the month he had examined theTimaru Main and side schools, and the schools at Rapgitira Valley, Mount Gay, and C'laio. He had been unable to complete all the reports on account of illness. He recommended that Dr Anderson’s proposals concerning district high schools be given a trial. Oe the motion of the Re** G. Barclay It was rsaolved that additions be made to the Waimataitai, Makikihi, and Raogitgta station schools, and that masters residences be erected at Albury, Sutber* lands, and Kabahu Bush ; the Chairman and Messrs Howell and Jickaon to have power to accept tenders. . It was decided to clusa the offices o_ the Board from Christman Eve to January 3rd, and to ho'd the next meeting of the Board on the 20iii January.
