The Auckland Gardeners’ Horticultural Society’s Spring Show was held in the Agricultural Hall on Friday. The display of vegetables was poor, the Chinese having nearly crushed out cottage gardening. The exhibition generally was equal to last year’s. The Kentish Lass has arrived at Wellington from Cambridge Gulf bringing 28 returned diggers from Kimberley. The majority are Wellington men. Their universal opinion is that Kimberley is a failure.
The total of tbe Mont D’Or (West Coast) washing was 480 ounces, valued at £1720. A dividend of one shilling per share was declared. The Ross United Tributors at Donohue’s washed up with 140 ounces.
The d welling-house of -Mr Langmuir, nureeryman, Dunedin, was destroyed by fire oj Friday morning through the explosion of a kerosene lamp. The owner, who is an invalid, had barely time to escape. The insurance amounted to £330.
A warm debate took place at the Dunedin Harbor Board meeting on the action of the Dock Trust in regard to floating a loan to proceed with the construction. The Dunedin members strongly opposed the course taken. Mr Donald Reid characterised the course adopted as reckless squandering, and said what had been done was calculated to mislead moneylenders.
At a meeting of the Oamaru Harbor Board on Friday, the subject of a leader that appeared in the Otago Daily Times, with reference to the harbor was dis* cussed, and a letter from the Board’s so’icitor was read,: in which the statement! in the leader.were characterised as libellous, inasmuch as they were untrue and calculated to do the Board barm. It was, however, after discussion, decided to give the Times an opportunity of rectifying its misstatements before proceeding further in the matter. Five of the female attendants at the Auckland asylum have withdrawn their resignations. Dr McGregor is satisfied that the threatened deadlock is now over. New Regulations are now being prepared, which will render a repetition of such an occurrence almost impossible. The nautical enquiry into the striking of the steamer Haurabi on a rock between Foxton and Opunake resulted in the certificate of J. Cooper, the mate, being suspended for a month. Wm. Stewart, brother of one of the three young women who were drowned in the boat accident at the Estuary at Sumner on November 9tb, has died from congestion of the lungs. He said after the accident that he did not wish to survive his sister, to whom he was much attached.
Aa enquiry commenced at Christchurch on Saturday into the death of a boy named IVolsey, who died in the hospital on Thursday. It is • alleged he was injured while fighting. The inquest was adjourned till Tuesday. The Kaitaogata Colliery company refuse to entertain the proposal of the Trades League in reference to the dispute being referred to a board of conciliation, on account of the leagues threat to boycott the company. Two shops in Victoria Street,. Auckland, occupied by Miss Duffle and Mr Bells, wore burned down on Friday night, the insurances amounting to £9OO.
