THE GREAT BARRIER TRAGEDY.
Auckiind, Nov. 23. The Great Barrier murder case was resumed this morning before Mr Seth Smith. The Cronn Solicitor said he had nine witnesses' to call whose evidence would be short. Jane McManus deposed to baying arranged on the 17tb June last logo with Cafrey in the Sovereign of the Seas, but she had changed her mind and refused to go in consequence of what she wa« told by a man named Lowndes whom she had seen talking to Caffrey. James Lowudes, master, of the ketch ' Lucy James, gave evidence regarding a drunken epiee on board the Sovereign of the Seas the night befoie she left for the Barrier. U-ff'ey when drunk 1 told witness that Mrs Ssyroour bad consented to go with Miiu, and he waß going to take her right away sooth in the cutter. Witness lent Caff<ey a large water keg for his : cutter. He heard the girl McManus tell C»ffrey ih-.t she would not go till next trip, and the latter said " You will have to stay then." George Tutter, waiter In an oyster saloon, deposed that Fenn and the girl bad Bupper »t U>e saloon a night or two before"" the Sovereign of the Seas left Auckland. In paying for the supper Penn • -id, " This is the list three shillings yon will have from me for a long iinie." There was a dispute as to the charge. Adam Henderson, part owner of the Soveraign of the Seas, said Caffrey worked the cutter for one-third earnings.

C»ffrey said nothing. Penn said that od the morning he went to Taylor's he meant do harm to anyone. He did harm to no one, and never shot'Taylor.
