GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.

A special meeting the Geraldine County Council was held yesterday. PreseE?— Messrs J. Talbot (Chairman), R. Mickay, K. H. Postlethwaite, R. A. Barker, and W. Moody. The Chairman explained that this was virtually a statutory meeting to elect a Chairman, but this could not be done till noon. The special meeting was for tht purpose of confirming resolutions already passed. These were, I o constitute the Rangitata Water Supply District, and adopt the Loans and Local Bodies Act.- The Council would then hare to call meetings in tha different districts to decide if the loss should be raised. This had been done in the case of the Level*, but under the new Act it would be necessary to go through the whole thing again.- Immediately the orders were adopted' both districts would go together and be in the same position. The Council would also have to elect four members to represent them on the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, instead of two as heretofore.

The special orders passed at a previous meeting were then confirmed. After considering a quantity of correspondence from the Mount Peel Road Board in regard to the proposed bridge over the Opuha, in which the Council was asked to obtain legal opinion as to whether the agreement between the Mount Peel Road Board and the Macs kenzle County Council, was-binding, it was resolved, on the motion; of Mr , Mickay, seconded by Mr Moody—" That the Minister of Public Works be in* formed that it is the desire of the Council to have a stock bridge built over the South Opuba River at Clayton road and that Government be asked to have this work proceeded with as soon as possible. This Council, if requested, will undertake the preparation of plans and construction of the bridge. This application is made because of the refusal of the Mackenzie County Council to carry out an agreement made six yenra ago to pay half cost, and this Council is of opinion that the request of the Mount Peel Road Board offering to pay half cost is a reasonable one, and for a necessary work. This application is made under clause 9, Public Works Act Amendment Act 1884." The special meeting then terminated and the annual statutory meeting of the Connoil was held. Mr Barker in a very complimentary speech proposed that Mr J. Talbot be reelected Chairman, and Mr Moody seconded the proposition, which was carried unanimously. Mr Talbot thanked the members for the honor done him, stating that in accepting. the position he was greatly influenced by the desire to see the irrigation works carried out.

Messrs Balfour and Talbot were elected representatives of the County on the High School Board for the year.

Messrs Talbot, Barker, J.alfour, and Postletb waite were elected representatives of the Couucil upon the S. C. Hospital and Charitable Aid Board for the ensuing year.

The Engineers reported as follows : " We have the honor to report on the several, works, under our .djr«QtipM M

follows : Opibi Bridge (Main road) protective works—This cootract h*s bten satisfactorily completed during t he current month, and we think it will pTov-- to be a very substantial and permanent work.— Wa draw the Council's attention to the necessity of protecting both b-inks of this river at about 15 chains above the bridge, as it ia encroaching there after every flood. We recommend the construction of five chains of very strong wire fencing, carried by ironbark piles, for th<i protection of the right bank, and that the groins on the left bank should be made up with large rubble stone—and , the clay bank immediately above fclie upper groin should be protected with large willow branches tethered with wire.— Upper Opihi bridge—Very neany all the timber and piles for this work are cm the ground, and pile-driving baa bfc'a commenced. It is expected that it will be completed in about six or seven weeks." After a discussion, it was decided th-it the work recommended by the Engine* r at the north side of the bridge should be don', I -it that the work on the souih side sh • '■ 'iot be undertaken at present. A leu r was received from the M- unt Peel Road Board, forwarding £lO2 17s 3d, amount of contribution to charitable aid for the last half-year, and asking what relief the ratepayers of the district and their employees are entitled to receive in CH«e of their going into the hospital at Timaru in the event of illness or accident.—The Charitable Aid Boird to bo requested to forward to the Mount Pee' Road Board a copy of regulation for admission to the Timaru Hospital. A letter wa3 read from Mr A. Max veil, aaddlsr, Timaru, requesting that tendem should be called for the supply of dog collars for this year, and it was resolved to do so.
