At the inquest on the man Andrews at Wellington on Thursday, the jury returned a verdict that deceased was accidentally burnt to death. The coroner said it was the most extraordinary case that had ever come under his notice. He could only suppose the man had concealed bis condition from a sense of shame at being brought to such a state by drink. The Hon. J. Ballance inspected the Awatere land, near Blenheim, on Wednesday, with a view of establishing a village settlement. He was banquetted by the Mayor and citizens of Blenheim on Thursday night. Samuel Callon, a man employed as stoker on the engine working at the Otago Heads, was on Thursday charged at the Police Court with giving tobacco to a prisoner contrary to section 33 of the Prisons Act. The gaoler said that a quantity of tobacco had been found in the possession of prisoners, but they had been hitherto unable to discover how it was obtained. Accused admitted the. charge and the Resident Magistrate said that, although it was the first offence, it could not be dealt with lightly. He inflicted a fine of £6. A further charge against the accused of conveying a letter from one of the prisoners, was dismissed on a technical ground. The Oamuru show on Thursday was very successful, and the attendance was large. The weather was fine. The following took the cups :—Ayrshire cattle, Mr James Gemmell ; thoroughbred horses, Mr John Henderson ; merino sheep, Hon. M. Holmes ; Leicester sheep, Little Bros ; Lincoln sheep, Hon, M.
