Frederick Austin and James Johnson were yesterday committed for trial for breaking into the Wellington warehouse of Mackay, Logan, Steen and Co., Auckland.
James Henry Roberts was committed for trial at Christchuroh yesterday on two charges of forging F. C. Murray's name to cheques for £6 14s and £5. Mr A. Ayers (the prsient Mayor) and Mr C. Louisson were nominated yesterday as candidates for the Cbristcburch Muyoralty.
Two well-known Dunedin bussioeaß men have been summoned for the 24th inst. for breaches of the Property Assessment Act in not sending in their returns. The s.s, Arawa arrived at Hobart at 10 o'clock yesterday morning.
By the busrting of a keroseie lamp a house ac Worth East Taller, Dunedin, owned and occupied by Jas. Jameson, was burned down last Tuesday night. The house and it* contents were insured ia the Phoenix office for £l7O.
About 12 o'clock last Tuesday night W. Howes' corn store in Cashel street, Christchuroh, was gntted by fire. The building, machinery, and stook were all destroyed or spoiled. They were insured for £I7OO. Tt'iree lads, William O'Brien, Thomas Wheeler, and George Walker, were, at the Auckland police Court yesterday, sentenced to three nionths' hard la.bor fur being found sleeping on the grounds of tbe Girls' High School.
