Pbinob qt Wales’ Bibxhday. To-day being the anmvenary of the Prince of Wale*’ birthday will be observed ae a public holiday. Axgling Combbxition. An angling competition under the auspices of the Q.O. Angler’s Society takes place to-day. Tomorrow night there will be a fish dinner at Temuka.

Thb New Dbillbhbd.—-A rumor went afloat yesterday to the effect that the new drtllebed at Temuka bad been considerably damaged by the high wind. The minor was not founded on fact, a* no damage was done.

The rumors floating about reflecting on the character of two Ministers of the Grown they consider to be baseless and malevolent, and the suspicion is unworthy of further notice. The various land agents differ as to the value of the land, their estimates varying from 216,000 to 28000. The Commission find that in Feb., 1885, Mr Stark had the land in the market for £7600, but when the Government entered on it for the purpose of survey in April, 1836, he withdrew it, saying he expected to get 220,000 f ir ft. They express the opinion that Government had they treated privately for tbe land when in the market could have had it for 27500. The Comminlon consider the price paid for the laud in excess of its value, but are of opinion that there was no irregularity in tke mode of conducting or completing the purchase. They acquit Mr Brewer, land purchase officer, of any blame, and also Mr Seaman, the property tax valuei, of complicity in any attempt to defraud the Government. All the membeis present then signed the requisition to Mr Posllethwaite. Lieut. Ward then informed them of the various parades that would take place during the month,especially calling attention to the annual parade inspection by Col. Thb Methodist Church, Qbbaldihb. —The anniversary services in connection with this Church were held on Sunday last. The Rev. W. J, Dean preached both morning and evening. Both services were well attended, the Church being comfortably filled. In the morning the rev. gentleman, dwelt principally upon the life of Christ in Heaven, taking as his text the words “ I am He that liveth and was dead and behold I am alive for evermore,” Rev. i., 18. In; the evening thb rev. gentleman chose as his text the words " Awake to'*' righteousness and sin not.” I Ooriathians, xr., 34. Mr Dean preached an hxeellent and impressive sarmon on the Resurrection.

Pibb at Qbealdinb, On Monday morning the shop and dwelling house occupied by Mr B. McKay, at Geraldine, narrowly esoapedrbsing burnt the ground. It appears that a man named James Coles, in the employ of Mr T. Parrel],, had got up.; early (about four o’clock) (or the purpose of making p> operations for bis employer going to Christchurch by the early train. Coming oulside he noticed the' glare of fire in the windows of McKay’s house, and a moment afterwards the flames burst through the roof. Coles immediately gave the alarm, and with the assistance of the neighbors succeeded in putting the fire out. The furniture and stock-in-trade are ioeured in the London Liverpool and Globe Company for £SO. Beyond a small amount of injury to the roof no damage was caused by the fire. Tbie is the third time this building, which is a very old one, has been on fire, and the police are making enquiries as to the cause ef this fresh occurrence. >lt is supposed to have been caused by the fire getting through a defective chimney to the roof. All the damage that was done is confined to the portion close to ribs chimney. Had the fire .got properly hold .of tbs buildings it wo.uld have ’beep impossible to have saved the Crown Hotel, which adjoins them.
