The monthly meeting of this Bonn! was held in the Board’s office on Toesday evening. Present—Messrs B. H. Peirpoint (Chairman), W. S. Maslin. J; Quinn, W. Berry, J, Mnndell, »ml R. Taylor. MINOTES. 'lhe minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Outward correspondence was read and approved of. Inwards was read and dealt with as fallows : From the Commissioner of Crows Lhnda asking if the Board would hr willing to exchange sections No. 194 and 217 for sections No, 193 and 219, Geraldine Town District. —It was decided to make the transfer, provided the Crown grants were banded to the Board free of cost and the Commie sioner attaches his name to the transfer. From the Clerk of the Geraldine County Council, asking the Board to forward the balance of their contribu tion, £lO 14s sd, to the Hospital and Charitable Aid amonnt was passed for payment, and the Clerk was instructed to call the Charitable Aid Board’s attention to a former resolution on the subject. From Mr C. W. Tripp, Orari Gorge, Stating that he had seen Mr Marchant, of Timarn, relative to a water supply for the town.
From Messrs Meason and Marchsni, ; surveyors, Timara, enclosing their charges for making a survey for the .water supply to the town.—After reading the two letters Mr Dunlop props sed :—“ That Mr Merchant be asked to vieit Geraldine for one day if the cost would not exceed three guineas, the Chairman and Clerk to accompany him in making the inspection,”—The Chairman thought one day would not give enough time for Mr March ant to give a definite opinion as to the scheme. In View.'of the liberality of Mr Tripp in the matter be thought two days would be better.—Finally Mr Maslin moved as an amendment that the letter of Mr Tripp be acknowledged with thanks and the Board intimate to him that they do not see their way clear to go to any expense at present. Mr Maslin thought it was quite time enough for the Board to move in this matter when the ratepayers earae forward and asked for a water supply. Foe his part he did not think it was at all wanted in Geraldine at present.—The amend men! being put, and the yoting being equal, the Chairman gare bis casting vote in favor of it.
From the Manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Geraldine, in reference to the Board’s deposits.—Received, From Mr A. Fisher, offering to lease the Board’s reserve No. 181, subject to the same conditions as the other -{reserves of the Board’s are let upon.—
It was dacided to call for tenders for easing the Board’s reserves No, 181 and 287.
‘ From Mr A. Fisher, on behalf of the Sooth Canterbury Times, asking that that paper might be made the official paper of the Board. From Mr A. Fisher, on behalf of the Timara Herald, asking that that paper might be made the official paper of the Board.—lt was decided, seeing that the Geraldine Guardian bad done the Board’s advertising during the past twelve months, to again call tenders for the Board’s priming and advertising for the ensuing twelve months. A letter was received from the Over-
seer of the Geraldine Hoad Board, enclosing his estimate for repairing and lengthening the above bridge. After bearing the estimate read, which was generally considered too nncb money to expend upon the bridge, Mr Mashn moved—“ That in the opinion of this Board the footbridge is not required, seeing there is a substantial bridge juet above the one proposed to be built.” The Chairman seconded this pro forma, Mr Mnndell moved as an amendmend—That this Board does not see its way clear to go to such an expense, bat are willing to contribute £lO towards patting the bridge in repair, this offer being made without prejudice.” Mr Dunlop who strongly advocated something being done to the bridge to p}ahe it passable, seconded the amendment. lower end of the town used the bridge daily. Mr Mnalin expressed the opinion that any expense incurred outside the Board’s boundaries would be illegal. A'ter some further discussion, Mr Mundell proposed, Mr Dunlop seconded, and it was carried —“ That the consideration of the subject be held over for the present, and in the meantime an opinion be taken as to whether the Board could legally spend the funds of the Board outside the Town District.” banger’s report. The Town Ranger’s report was read, giving a list of persons whose cattle bad been found wandering iu the streets. BY-LAWS. Mr Maslin moved the proposition standing in his name—“ That by-laws Nos. ] and 2 be amended, and Nos. S to 10 be made.” Mr Mundell seconded the proposition, which was earned, SPECIAL MEETING. It was decided to hold a special meeting on Tuesday, 16th inst., for the purpose of considering the by-laws anJ other business. NOTICE OF MOTION. Mr Quinn gave notice that at the next ordinary meeting he would move— , “ That the Board obtain the services of a competent working Overseer, for the purpose of keeping the streets in repair.” overseer’s report. The Overseer’s report was then read as follows : “ To the Chairman and Members. “ Gentlemen, —For your instructions I have the honor to report that the work ordered to be done in McDonald street has been carried ont to the satisfaction of the applicants. The surface-men (two at a time) have been working in every part of the town, principally with the work in McDonald street and the road leading to Dr Fish’s’ The streets end footpaths generally are in good order and condi tion.—Will the Board give me some definite instructions with reference to putting in pipe or woeden culverts in the water tables to enable the owners and occupiers of laud to pass over the footpaths to their premises ?—The time has expired for the Board’s advertising in the Geraldine Guardian. —The following moneys have been received during the month and lodged to the Board’s credit : Kents, £2 10h ; asphalt, £2 18s 6d ; license, 5s ; cement, 2s 6d ; pipes, £1 3s 6d ; total,. £6 19s 6d.—l have, etc., “ C. The Clerk stated that .Mr G. Taylor had applied to have a wooden or pipe culvert put down fronting his property, in order to allow of bis getting timber, etc., to his workshop. Mr Dunlop also applied to have a culvert put down to enable traps to be taken on to the premises cf the Good Templar lodge. It was decided to grant the two applications. It was decided npon the motion of Mr Quinn, seconded by Mr Berry—- “ That in future all applications for crossings be made in wriiing to the Board for their consideration.” horse posts. Mr Dunlop pointed out that the horse posts in front of Mr Waite’s shop had not yet been removed. The Chairman said the matter had been left in the hands of the Works Committee to be carried ont. The Committee promised to see to matter before the next meeting. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £3O 14s were passed for payment, and the Board resolved itself into a BOARD OF HEALTH. The Inspector’s repot was read, and showed the town to be in fair sanitary condition. It was resolved to insert a clause in the by-laws compelling all persons burying dead animals in the reserve set apart by the Board for the purpose, to cover them with three feet of earth. It was decided to give notice to all persons having a nuisance on . their premises to abate the same, or the Board will do so at their expense. This being all the business the meeting terminated.
