THE QUICKEST TIME ON RECORD.

' A running match between W. G. ; George : (an ex-amateur), of Worcester, and W. Cummings, of Paisley, tsok place at the Lillie Bridge Grounds, West Bromptoa, recently. Ihe stakes were £IOO a-side. George got into his stride very quickly, and although he had lost the toss for choice of positions, and eras of course, on the outside of the trank, ' before thirty yards had been covered he was leading by about a yard and a half. Just on the completion of the three-quarters of a mile, in 3min 7Jseo- from • the start, Cummings dashed to the front and i was soon leading by two yards and a half, George at onoe went in hot pursuit, until within about 200 yards from the finish, when Cummings was compelled to slacken his pacej and George, with bis ion g raking stride, succeeded in getting on terms with his opponent very quickly. A brief struggle then ensued,

Cummings being the first to yield, as he ceased to persevere when but a hundred yards remained to be covered 5 and George, at once coming away, finally finished by himself, amid a scene of great excitement, in the wonderful time of 4min 12fsec —thus beating all previous times, both amateur and professional, the record having been 4min IBiaeo, made by Cummings a little over five years ago.
