AUCKLAND, Oct. 9. Reid, for indecent assault on » child i ! >ged 11, was acquitted at the Supreme Court today by the direction of Mr Justice Ward owiDg to the child not undtrsthnding the nature of an oath. Christian Johnson for indecent assault on his own daughter was sentenced to five years, and two floggings of 25 lashes each. Wellington, Oct. 8. James Cook, indicted for larceny, was acquitted on the charge. Oct, 9. At the Supreme Court, William Mareden was convicted of stealing a watch and remanded till the Ist November for sentence. In the meantime enquiries will be made if he can come under the Eirst Offenders Act. James and Obarlotte Cook were found not guilty on the second charge of receiving stolen property, and a nolle prosequi was entered in the other charges, the prisoners being discharged. Cheistchukch, Oct. 8. Paul Gortzloff, for forgery, was sentnnced to five yearß. Oct. 11. Sentences were passed as folio/rs : P. P. Hunt (indecent assault), Jonathan Ruberts (forgery), and James Han well (perjury), .the first was placed tinder the Probation Act for six months, and ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution ; Hanwell, who had been recommended to mercy, received the same sentence, to be bound over towards the prosecutor, and piy £lO of the costs ; Roberts was senten fenced to twelve months' hard labor. The Civil Court was adjourned to Mooday, the IBtb. Dunedin, Oct. 8. In tba charge of sheep stealing against Robert Kidd and John McKeon, the Utter was acquitted, and Kidd, who is over 75 years of age, was sentenced to two months. This closed the criminal calendar.
