The VY at Coast Times publishes a letter frvni its Jackson’s Bay correspondent, which says the Uinemoa arrived at Big; Bay on Septrinb-r 22nd. and landed 160 passengers and 120 tons of stores without m'shnp, the weather beingfine. Murray, the engineer, went on to Jackson’s Bay to commence operations for a south road. A trial shipment of nickel and other ores is being sent to Justis Scbarff, Sydney agent for the New Caledonian Nickel Association, and representative of a German firm whose specialty is the manipulation of difficult ores. Late news from the Gorge river confirms the favorable report of the nickel and gold yields. The Government schooner Kekeno, which was wrecked at the Bluff, and handed over by the Government to the Bluff Navals, was successfully floated on Thursday night by Captain Ward and the Naval Company, and brought alongside the wharf. Although the damage is considerable, the Navals intend repairing her for their own use.
Various rumors of intending changes In the Civil Service have been circulated this week, the principal being that all servants under 10 years standing were to receive notice and come in again if they liked under the new Act. The Premier asserts positively that this is absolutely without foundation. The whole question of dealing with the Civil Service is under consideration, but nothing has been mooted in the direction indicated. The Otago A. and P. Society’s horse parade on Thursday was one of the most successful yet held. There were 25 Clydesdale entires and a number of mares, six thoroughbreds, one cayriage, one trotting, and three ponies.
