AMERICAN CANDOUR.

The Prince of Wales grows stouter and redder of face with his years. Every sign of youth has disappeared, and he is now simply the middle aged English gentleman, and of much rotundity of belt. I heard him speaking to his son, and could not but observe the strong guttural German accent with which he spoke his native tongue. The Princess, though as amiable, gentle, and gracious of manner as she was in youth, has faded greatly since I last saw her in 1863. She is very thin, and coughed dreadfully, in a way that would frighten a thoughtful husband who loved his wife. But I did not observe any visible concern in the face of her Royal husband. The Queen is not popular among the common people or the nobility. She could help her eldest son to pay his debts, but she will not. With an income of almost £150,000 per annum, ha is always behind. Indeed, one of the standing puzzles of the club is, What on earth can the Prince do with his money ? He never pays anyone, and tradespeople do not care to have his patronage, for he will not pay them. There is a story current that his tailor, to whom he owes about £4OOO, flatly refuses to send His Boyal Highness another suit of clothes until he has paid him something on account of a bill that has been running for 25 years, —London correspondent Washington paper.

T' K Tied BOR V B OLMMaKT IN AMERICA. The Tiohborno claimant reached Haw York a few weeks ago, with the avowed intention of lecturing throughout the country. It i» not Ihe lecturing season at present, and he has thus far made but one attempt, when he spoke to empty benches. He is enormously stout, as he weighs 2801 b, while his height is about 5 feet 9 inches. A few days ago he was interviewed by the reporter of a New York newspaper, with the following result: — “ What are your intentions at present?” •• I am going to lecture hero and iu Canada," said the claimant, “as soon as the season begins, with a view of raising money to carry on a new lawsuit.” “ Then you will go to law about the Tichborne estates again ?” " Most certainly ” wss the emphatic loply, “ Circumstance* were against mo at the trial, but aside from that the newly-discovered evidence is such as not only to give me a standing in court, but to maka my aucoeis absolutely certain.” ‘ What is the nature of this newly-dis-covered evidence?’’ “ You know I was convicted os Arthur Orton. Well, I have found Arthur Orton, and his identity on be proved beyond pos libility of a doubt. He is in the Paramatta Lunatic Asylum In Australia under the name of William Cress well. I have had the members of the Orton family sent out there, and am in possession of their affidavits swearing that he is the man. I have the affidavit of William Orosswell’a wife that ho told her bis name was Arthur Orton, and that a warrant was out for bis arrest under that name, and I have a copy of the warrant, ismed at a place I have never been in. I have sworn statements from many of the witnesses in the last trials that they committed perjury, and the affidavit of ex Detective Meiklejuhn, of Scotland Yard, saying that ho was employed by the Government in packing the jury against me. Now, as to Arthur Orton. When his mother went to Paramatta to see him, she was accompanied by several members of the Legislature, and there ware about a dozen in the party. When informed of his mission, the officers of the asylum had the inmates drawn up in a line, and Charles Orton was told to walk down the line and pick out his brother. He walked past over 100 of the men, scanning each face, then stopped opposite Cress well, and the two rushed into each ether’s arms.”

11 What will be your first move before the English courts ?” “ To sue for false imprisonment, and show that I am not Orton. I was sentenced twice, cnee for seven years for saying that I was, not Orton. I will first prove that I am not Orton, and next that I am Sir Sogtr Tiohborne, You may not know, by the way, that Gladstone i« connected by marriage with the Tichborne family. He was against me before, but he is no longer Prime Minister, and I expect to get fair play.” " What are you doing now ?” “Writing my life, which will be published in book form within a year. I am also writing articles about places I have visited. A great many of these museum proprietors want to get me, but I will not go with them. When l i begin lecturing under proper auspices this fall, I expeot to attract largo crowds,” “ Who is interested in your case now P” "Mias Baring, of the great family of bankers, chiefly, with many wealthy Englishmen. M.fs Baring has spent 40,000 dollars in collecting evidence during the last two or three years, sending agents to Australia and all over the world, and everything is now in band. The evidence I have is absolutely inoontrovertible, and proves not only thst I am not Arthur Orton, but that I am Sir Roger Tiohborne.”
