JAM FACTORY.

TO THE HEITOR. Sis,—There is one industry which has not yet been pushed forward in our district—viz , a jam actory. I think one would work very well in the midst of such fruitful districts as Geraldine and Temuka, as there are a great many youths growing up who have but very little to do, and if such an industry were started thej would be well employed for a part of the year in gathering those small fruits of which I have seen tons lying rotting on the ground. lam not a practical jam manufacturer myself, but 1 would like, Mr Editor, that you should suggest some other means of turning our fruit to better use. When Igo into town and buy a few tins of jam I have to pay for them pretty dear. We should try and keep the money in our pockets for materials which we ought to be well able to manufacture ourselves in our own district. If this industry were started on a small scale, a lot of people would go in for fruit-growing. I would say Winchester would be a very central place, as there would no jealousy between Geraldine and Temuka, and 1 think, Mr Editor, that there’is a great deal of fruit both north and south of that place. Ido not see why we should not compete with other jam factories, which are paying very well, and 1 do not think, Mr Editor, it would cost such an enormous sum to erect a building and procure a few coppers. Some men complain of having too many shares in hand already, but we must not look at it in that light, as it is the very industry that would suit the working classes of these districts. There are a lot of men that would not, perhaps* take up shares, but would willingly subscribe a little towards the establishment of a jam factory.—l am, etc., Fruitgrower. Pleasant Valley, Sept. 27th, 1886.
