Ague HabbowS. — A public trial of the Acme Harrpws takes place on the farm of Mr W. Frew, near Temuka, to-day. Skin Sale.— Messrs J. Mundell and Co. notify that they are now receiving entries fur their skin sale to be held on Tuesday, 28tb iißt. Tbmuka Rifles. — A Government Parade takes place at. the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, to-morrow, at half-past three o’clock ; full dress. Temuka School Committee. —• The monthly meeting of the Temuka School Committee takes place this erening at halfpast seven o’clock. Hobsb Paeadb.— Owners are reminded that entries for the forthcoming parade at Temuka must be made with the Secretary, Mr W. Wills, before noon to-morrow. Monthit Stock Salk at Tbmuka.— The monthly sale of stock at Tenuka takes place next Friday. Mr K. F. Gray and Messrs J. Mundell and Co. advertise entries. Gold Sbbkebs. —The Hinemoa left the f Bluff for Big Bay yesterday, with 145 miners on board. All are well found, and doubtless a thorough trial of the district will now be made. Tbndebs. —Tenders are invited in another column for erecting about 80 chains more or less of wire fencing at per chain.. Specifications can be seen at the Road Board Office, Geraldine. San Fbancisoo Mail. —The mail matter for the district via San Francisco, arrived last, night shortly after eight o’clock per special train. The mail steamer arrived at Auckland early on Saturday morning. The? Result of an Accident.— The Maori boy named Kahu who was hurt some time ago in the Temuka Linseed Factory died on Sunday morning. He had been ailing ever since he met with the accident. Sale of Farming Plant.* —Attention is directed to the sale by Me-srs J. Mundell and Co., to-day, of the farming plant of Mr Samuel Gould. The sale takes place on Mr •Gould’s farm, near the Orari Traffic Bridge. Gbbaldink Road Board. This Board issues three notices this morning which it would bo well for ratepayers in the district to take notice of. They refer to arrears of rates, gates upon' roads, and gorse upon roads. Sbcbbtabf Wanted. The Geraldine Racing Club invite applications for Ihe post of secretary. Applications to be made by the Ist proX. The duties, etc., can be ascertained on application to the Chairman, Mr R. H. Pearpoint, The Colonial Exhibition.—By the ’Frisco Mail the Government, have received a communication on the subject of keeping the Colonial Exhibition open beyond the original term. 'Before coming to a decision the other colonies will be communicated with. A Successful Company. —At the annual meeting of the Dairy Factory Company at Wanganui on Saturday last, the balance-sheet showed a pnfit of £419 for the season, equal to 25 per cent, on the paid-up capital. The t.urniout of cheese was 39 tons 4 cwt. The factory has again started work, with the expectations of a better season than the last. Loans to Local Bodies. —The Colonial Treasurer is preparing a precis of the provisions of the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, and notice will shortly be given of a date wheh applications for loans can be granted, until they have obtained authority to raise them. This is given under the Local Bodies Loan Bill and the Counties Act. The latter comes into force in January, but the requisite power .is in existence in the old [Act. \ The New Dbillshed at Temuka.— The foundation stone of fhe new Volunteer drillshed at Temuka L to bo laid to-morrow, and should the weather prove favorable there will doubtless be a large assemblage to witness the ceremony. At 3.30 the Volunteers will assemble for parade, and at 4 p.m. the stone will be laid by Mrs Hayhurst, after which the Company will partake of a cold lunch in the Volunteer Hall. Majors Newall and Hamersloy'.and the Hon. W. Rolleston are expected lobe present. Spoktins.— A telegram from London states that the St, Leger was run on Wednesday last, and was won by Ormonde, St. Mirim being second, and Exmoor third.—The Australian Jockey Club meeting commenced on Saturday, The A.J.C. Derby, a sweepstake of 30 hovs with 500 added (72 subs), was won by the Hon. J. White’s ch c Trident, Mr D. Cooper’s ch c Bailgowrie being second ; time 2min 38secs. The Epsom Handicap, of ssovs each, with 250 soya added, was won by Zeno, Cold Lake second; time Imin il^seca. Sudden Death.— A somewhat sudden death occurred at the Kangitat t Bridge on Sunday. Mr George Py<‘, a very old resident in Geraldine and brother of Mr John Pye of the same town, died at his residence at about 2 p.m. on the day named. It appears that the deceased gentleman has been suffering for some little time past from the effects of a severe cold, caught while crossing the Rangitatn, hut lately has been much improved. Dining the past week he spent two or tluee days in Geraldine, which seemed to improve his health considerably. On Saturday he remarked to his brother how w 311 Ins felt, and expressed a hope (0 be about his work again in about a week. On Sunday, however, he was se’zed with an apopletic fit and died in a few hours. Deceased was an old resident of Geraldine and much respected,
Fikb Alarm. —At Temuka laH Saturday sight, about 10 p.m., the fire boll was rung, and immediately the whole Own w-s in a stir. Those inhabiting the lower end of ihe town, on looking out, immediately came to the conclusion that the Temuka Hotel was ablaze, judging by the volume of smoke which was apparently issuing from it, but on reaching the scene of the supposed conflagration they discovered their mistake. The fire was caused by the burning of flilbushes on the section adjoining the Hotel. It was quickly put out without any damage whatever.
Chesi. A chess match between Christchurch and Timaru players—-ten men a side—by telegraph, commenced on Saturday evening last. Some difficulty was experienced in getting the Timaru men together, one of them not commencing play till h 1 f past 10, It, had been arranged that the limit shall be 20 moves an hour, in order to get the game over quickly. Messrs W. J. Wood, R. E. Fish, C. H. Clark, Hassell, W. W. King, W. E. Kinnerney, J. Edwards, D. Virtue, H. 13. Courtis, and F. J. Wilson represent Timaru, and A. H. Todd, C. J. Jakms, K. T. Searell, A. L. Smith, J. 3-. L. Scott, W. McWilliams, A. Cant,-J. J. Milner, W. Acton-Adams, and Woodrough, Christchurch. So fur Christchurch has the best of the match, which will be resumed on\ Saturday evening next. Funkbal of ahr Latb Mb Patebson. —-The funeral of the late Mr John Paterson, which took place yesterday, was the larges* ever seen in Temuka. Mr Paterson having been a Mason, the brethren of the mystic tie mustered in very large numbers. There were altogether 54 Masons walked in proeesuon from Ihe house to the Cemetery, and many others rode in carriages. The funeral procession was about half-a-mile in length, and consisted of 64 Masons on foot, 56 carriages, and 60 horsemen, besides many others who travelled on foot. At the Cemetery, the Rev. Mr Cecil read the Presbyterian burial service, and the Rev. Mr Hamilton the Masonic burial (service. People from Christchurch, Geraldine, Peel Forest, Timaru, and all the intervening districts were present to pay the last tribute of respect to the memory of him whom to know was to esteem, and it will be long before so large a funeral will be seen again in Temuka. Alleged Laboent. —At the R.M. Court, Timaru, yesterday, before J. Beswick, Esq., H.M. and E. Elworthy, Esq., J.P., Patrick Nolan was charged with having stolen an order for £ls from the office of Moody and Ziesler. The evidence went to show that the order was received by Mr Ziesler on the Ilth Aug. and handed over to Ihe clerk, who placed it in a book. Both Mr Ziesler and the clerk stated they believed Ihe accused was in the office when the latter placed the order in a book. Patrick Power, a farmer at the Levels, was with the accused on the 11th, and said that at Ihe request of the accused he cashed an order, similar to the one produced, at the Timaru Hotel. Mrs White, wife of the licensee of the Timaru Hotel, said that she remembered the accused and Power coming into the hotel between 10 and 11 o’clock on the night of Ihe 11th, and getting the order cashed. Mr White gave corroborative evidence, and the accused was committed for trial, bail being allowed in two sureties of £75 each, and accused in the amount of £l6O.
