A J.P. ON THE SUPPORT OF LOCAL INDUSTRIES.
They have strong ideas on Protection at New Plymouth. In the Police Court there a Mr Berry, an ironmonger and contractor, was charge! with having sold three cases of ale to Judge Rawson without being duly licensed. Being on business at Mr Berry’s one dsy Judge Liawson had a glass of ale, -which he liked so much that he asked Mr Berry where he obtained it, and being told that it came irom a Dunedin firm he asked Mr Berry next time he was order? ing any to order a few cases for him also. Mr Berry assented, and ordered three cases with other goods from Dunedin, and on arrival sent them up to Judge Lawson’s, They had been charged to Mr Berry by the Pnnedin firm, but he had not asked Judge Rawson for the money, nor was there any idea that he intended to make any profit out of the transaction. After a long hearing Mr W, Bayley, J.P., who pre? sided on the Bench, delivered judgment as follews : —“ The magistrates are of opinion that they must dismiss this case, hot still, at the same time, they consider that it is wrong for one person to import for another, or even it is not legitimate business lo import for him? self. We ajl wapt to piafce a Hying, and those who pay for licenses apd for houses of apcopupodalion—these houses should certainly be supported ; and if every person imported in the same way that Mr Berry and Judge Rawson did, what gentleman in New flypiopth would take out a license ? That is the way X look 8t the case. J hope I shall not see anyone importing in a large way in the future,"
