DESTRUCTIVE FLOOD.
Owjng to tlie heavy fresh iu the Wairaii river, after continuous rains, one of the Severest floods known in Blenheim for inany years occurred on Thursday. It ' was quite as h'ifli as in February, 1868. The shops were closed, and business was at a standstill. The water was breast hi«li in some of the streetp, and from ;hree to four feet deep in the centre of the town. The Express was unable to pnV'ih, as.the w-i Cir put out the fires.r,;ijfy* ft oi.; ; :ooms u£ the banks were in the principal st'e- ta. The flood in the Marketplace rose! twelve inch°s in four hours. There w<aW ; no railway communication, parts of the-line being wanned away. A large area of the country district was under water, and there was considerable loss in sheep, horses, and cattle. There.was a heavy gale at Nelson rn Wednesday night, and floods are reoorted from all the coim'ry district?, though there is no serious damage done.
