AROWHENUA TOWN BOARD.

The first meeting of the newly-elected Town Board of Arowhenua was held last Tuesday evening in Mr Lee’s office. All the members were present. On assembling Mr Wills look the chair, ; EMOTION OF CHAIRMAN, Mr Edgeler proposed, and Mr Proudlock seconded— “ That Mr Lee. be elected Chairman of the Board.” This was carried unanimously. Mr Lee, on taking the Chair, thanked them for the honor they had conferred on him, and expressed a hope they would always work harmonh m!y together. He would not like to see the Board a bear garden, and would always do his beet to conduct the meetings so as to promote a friendly feeling between the members. Ultimately Mr Edgeler proposed Mr Story seconded, and u was carried unanimously—' That applications bo called for the office of clerk and overseer, ■alary to be £3O per annum.” OFFICES Mr Edgeler said the next question was to appoint the place they would have as their office. The Chairman said they expected the Government cottages would be vested in them, but they could nntdo anything with them in the meantime- They could have the use of his office until they had decided on what to do. Mr Edgeler moved—“ That Mr Lee s Store be the tempoi a»y office of the Board, pending the fitting up nf a pi-rmaneni office.” The motion was seconded hr Mr Proudlock, and carried unanimously. IMPOUNDED LAND FUND. Mr Edgeler said next business was to write a letter to the Land Board, asking that plans and all information about the sale of sections be furnished to the Board. A long oonvers'licn took place on - tliitsubject, ni.- r ultimately it was proposed by Mr S o:\ seconded hy Mr Austin, and carried unanimously—“ That the Commissioner of Crown Lands be written to, asking him to withhold paying any money to the lemuka Road Board, pending „ settlement of the question as to homuch the Rond Board is justly entitled to receive ; and also to furnish this Board with the number of sections sold, the amount realised from such sales, and the total amount due to the Board.” , RAXES. Mr Edgeler thought they should examine the Road Board rate-roll, so as t< ascertain the amount of their rates. The Chairman sain it would be 'he business of their Clerk to make out < rate-roll. DUTIES OF THE CLERK. Mr Austin moved, Mr Story seconded, and It was carried unanimously—“ That two. members of the Committee, namely, Messrs Lee and Proudlock, be a subcommittee to draw up a list of the duties of the Clerk, and that the said list be ieft in Mr Lee’s store for inspection.” RESERVES. Mr Proudlock wanted to know what steps should be taken about the reserves. It was suggested to appoint a subcommittee to ascertain the locality and area of the reset ves. Mr Proudlock said the sooner they set . about letting them the better. Mr Edgeler said there were four sec- ■ tionsset aside for education, and two of them were sold and built on. He would suggest that the spare piece of land between Mr Nevill’s and Mr Button's should be used as a shingle pi>. ' . The Chairman said they would have to r* the reserves first. Mr Edgeler said this was not a rci-swi-. and they ought to take it up nt once. STATUTES. Mr Edgeler moved— “ That the necessary copies of the atatu'es required by the Board be procured." Mr Story seconded the motion, and it «a« cairied unani. monsly. SEAL Mr Austin proposed—“ That the Chairman be authorised to obtain a seal for the Board.” Mr Edgeler seconded the motion, and it was carried. The Board then adjourned tili Tuesday, August 31.
