AROWHENUA TOWN BOARD.

Great interest was taken in the first election of a Town Board for Arowbenua od Saturday. The polling booth was at Mr Le9's store, and shortly after 6 p.m. the vacant p'ots in its vicinity wero crowded with people anxiously awaiting the declaration of the poll. It took Mr Wills »nd the two scrutineers from 6 p.m. to 7.45 to go through the papers, and all this time the crowd continued increasing! but still one of the candidates—Mr G. Edgeler—was conspicuous by bis absence, and amongst those who were most anxious to see him was Mr Badhaui, who came in all the way from Rangitata. When the poll wbs declared, and Mr JSdgeler placed on the top of the list, the crowd cheered heartily and called for Mr Edgeler, but he was not present, and next Mr Lee was called upon to make a speech, but he declined to do so, and the crowd dispersed quite disappointed with the successful candidates, not one of whom would speak. The result of the poll was as follows :

MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD. The ordinary meeting of the Mount Peel Koad Board was held at their office, Peel Forest, on Friday last. Present—The,Hon t J. B. A. Acland (Chairman), and Messrs 0. /G.Tripp, G. J. Dennistoun, R. Maokay, and ,R.Thew. ' The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. From the Colonial Secretary, stating that matters concerning control: of fords on a boundary river must be arranged between the two Counties concerned. ' ' From the Commissioner of Property Tax, about rates and subsidy. The Clerk was instructed to reply to the Commissioner, giving the required information, and to Mr Oar'twright'that he musk apply (to hare his, nant'e i removed! at next revision, of roll. A special meeting was then held, at which all the members were present. Mr Dennistoun propesed, and Mr Msckay seconded,;' that :';the;; following resolution, passed, at the Board's meeting, held on the lit, May, 1886,,be' reacihtfed—"That the Mount' ! Peel Road Board'is'"prepared to pay one-third of the cost of erecting a bridge over the Opihi River at the head of the Totara Valley road, and one-half the cost of a stock-bridge oyer the *io'utfcl>ranonKof the Opuha River Jon, the;'Clayton "road, : iprovided the total cost to this Board does not exceed £690." Proposed by Mr Maclcay, seconded by Mr Trippjand carried—"Thatthe Mount Peel Road Board accept the offer made to them by the Gera'dine County Council in a letter datedthe 11th August, 1886, and agree to pay! a' subsidy of £2OO ' towards the erection ;of tbcOpiljijßfidge, as they t are informed that,.the Council will then undertake the building of the'iaid.bridge." ; >-'-'• Proposed by Mr' Dennistoun, seconded by the Chairman, and carried—" That while the Board consider the bridge to which they hare agreed to give a special subsidy a necessary 'work, and have, therefore, agreed to give it in this case, still they Wish to place it on record that they do not approve of subsidies as a general rule." Proposed by Mr Thew, seconded by the Chairman,-and carried—VThat the Board wish to record the fact that the estimated ooitof the bridge was £I6OO, of whioh this Board agreed to pay one-third, vit., £6OO under the resolution this day rescinded; the County hare now contracted to build the bridge for £1133, the" ■mount" therefore to be paid by this Board is the subsidy of £2OO, and the sum of £llß, the share payable by this district out of a County rate of .£IOOO, which will more than core? the above oontraot." This closed the business of the speoial meeting, and the business of the 03DIITABY MIITING , was then proceeded with. Proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Mr Tripp, and carried (Mr G. J. Dennis* toun protesting)—" That a rate be levied, ol one farthing in the Pound, to be made undes the provisions of the Rating Act 1882, on the 17th September, 1886, for the period com* mencing let April, 1886, and ending 31st March, 1887, payable on the Ist January, 1887." The Overseer's report was then read, stating that a fortnight should finish No 2 oontract on main road, and that the surface men had been fully employed in repairs on th» Kakahu and Burke's Pass road, whioh has bad to be widened, and a dangerous Blip made good. Bco'-bum Creek bank has been protected, end some work haa been done on the Main, Horsetail's, Eugene's, ftriffin's, and Crocs roads. Accounts to the amount of £209 la 4d were passed for payment. The Overseer reported that he had poisoned and distributed several bushels 7 of wheat to ratepayers, ljoz stryohnine to the bushel, which they reported waa killing large numbers of birds. : The meeting then adjourned; :
