S.C. CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

An adjourned ordinary meeting of the 'South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held on Wednesday afternoon at Timaru, there being present Messrs J. Jackson (Chairman), G. V. Clarke, J. Tulbot, G. F. Clulee, and A. Hayes, Dr Hayes again sent in hie claim % tor £3 3a, stating that he would not have beeo disposed to press his claim but for the fact that the Timaru Hospital was not in the proper sense of the word a Charitable Institution, it was in reality an opponent to outßide proctitiouers. After Borne discussion Mr J. Talbot gave notice that at next meeting he would move that the motion passed by the Board at a former meeting disallowing the claim be rescinded. The Clerk to Lie Levels Road Board wrote formally protesting against the proposed 'expenditure on the Timaru Hospital, 'and the Cl'airman to the Waimate County Council wrote forwardthe following resolutions which as they bore directly ou the vital questions at issue were taken with the same. The resolutions were:—"That tbie Counc'l deems che amount of the contribution required, of it by the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board for the year 1886-7 to be unjust, (f) Inasmuch as this Council is called upon to contribute £1325, in addition to the voluntary contributions, amounting to over £125. (2) Further, this Council considers the amount levied on this portion of the district unjust, inasmuch as the total cost of maintaining the institution in this county and borough and affording charitable aid does not exceed £1550, whereas J;he South Canterbury Board is demanding from the Council and Borough of Waimate a sum, including subsidy, exceeding £BOO. (3) This Council further considers that, having erected an expensive institution in this district, it is unjust to be compelled to contribute so largely towards the erection and nvdnITtetance of hospitals in other parts of the South Canterbury district. (4) This Council declines to pay .the amount of £1125, as requested by the South Canterbury Board. The Chairman of the Council added that a copy of these resolutions bad been forwarded to the Coloniuljecretary. The tenders for the additions were us A.Sinclair (less £l4), £3430; J. J.
