An interview has taken place between Sir Graham Berry and the Right Hon. K. Stanhope, Secretary of State for the Colonies, regarding the New Hebrides. Sir G, Berry urged that the Imperial Government should without delay elicit from the French Government the date ; upon which the French forces would be | withdrawn. The Right Hon, Stanhope i expressed concurrence in Sir G. Berry’s : contention, and slated he believed ; France would shortly be obliged to come to a settlement on the Now , Hebrides question. - At a banquet given in the Mansion House lu>t evening by the Lord Mayor, to the members of the Ministry, Lord Salisbury, replying to the toast of (be Her M ij sty’s Ministers, said it was the duty <l’ Government to free Loyalists . from constraints and restore order in Irelaii'i, the failure to do which was the just and solo cause of discontent. His Lordship alluded to the steps that had been taken for the settlement of the Afghan and Egyptian questions, which as yet were unfinished. He expressed the opinion that (here were increased hopes of the maintenance of peace in Europe, No further disturbances have occurred at Belfast during the past twenty-four hours. The town is now tranquil. All the members of the Ministry who have found it necessary to offer themselves for re-election have been returned unopposed. The opposition threatened to the re-election of Mr Matthews as Home Secretary was not persisted in. Aug. 12. The Parnellite newspapers in Ireland, in articles to-day on the Premier’s speech at the Mansion House last night, say, generally, in regard to Lord Salisbury’s statements as to the course to bo pursued in Ireland, that it must be taken as a declaration of war, and to declare that the truce between tho Irish Nationalists and the Executive is egpfcl. & The English postal authorities favor the establishment of a twopenny post card system with Australia. IS. A number of colonial visitors proceeded yesterday to Chester, where they were entertained at luncheon by the Mayor, the Duke of Westminster and Bishop Chester being present. The party afterwards drove to Eton Hall, the seat of the Duke of Westminster, as guests to His Grace. - A state of tranqui ity prevails in Belfast, but the precautions which were taken in view of farther disturbances have in no way been relaxed. The frozen meat by the Orient is Selling at and,that by the Doric at s|fd. A portion of The meat cargo by, the ship Malaura has arrived in an unsatisfactory condition.

Le Nationale and other French journals express the opinion that Australia had belter recognise that France will not evacuate the New Hebrides.

A dastardly outrage has been perpetrated at Derry. As an Orange precession was parading tbe streets bottles containing punpowder, with lighted fuses attached, were, thrown among the processionists, but fortunately no one was harmed.

Mr Ptanhope, Secretary of Statu for the Colonics, has issued an official notification that he will receive, at tie Colonial Office on each Tuesday during the remainder of the month any colonial visitors who may desire on interview with him.

It is announced that a mating of the. Cabinet has been held, at which Sir; Michael Hicks-Beach, Chief Secretary, for Ireland, reported, that the slate of that country was reassuring. The; Cabinet decided that Parliament should be prorogued as soon as Supply has; been obtained. A Committee of the, Cabinet was appointed to consider the position of affairs in Ireland.

Sir Chas. Tapper, High Commissioner of Canada, is proceeding to Ottawa to confer with the Dominion Government concerning the proposed pmnanent colonial exhibition in London, and what part Canada should take in connection therewith. ,

Le Libnrte, in an article to-day upon the New Hebrides question, insists on the occupation of those islands by the French troops temporarily. It slates that the force will be withdrawn when its presence there is unnecessary in the interests of the French subjects resident at the New Hebrides.

The official journal publishes an .article to-day regarding the FrancoGerman protocol of December last relating to the future operations of those countries on the west coast of Africa and the South Pacific. Ly-?e-Moon in May last, and found that the ssmo was caused by the default of Captain Webber and Mr Potheringham,, the third officer. The Board will give its decision ns to their certificates cn Monday next. The Norwegian barque Belona arrived to-day from New York, and brings; with her the crew of the ship Royal Edward, which left Gloucester fir Melbourne on the 20ih April last. The tatter vessel, having become waterlogged, was abandoned at sea by tbe crew. Aug. 14, The Triumph arrived at Newcastle to-day, bringing among her passengers thirty-one returned diggers from Kira-i berley. They ; give discouraging, though, indefinite, reports as to the state of the field.
