PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.

A congregational meeting was held last night in the Presbyterian Church, Temuka, at which the Rev. Mr White, ox Pleasant Point, presided. After reading a portion ©f the Scriptures, offering up prayers, and reading the minutes of the last meeting, the rev. Chairman explained that the business was to consider certain resignations. He was reluctant to (declare the positions vacant, because he Wished to see peace restored and the past forgotten. He hoped the persons xWho had'resigned would withdraw their resignations, Tho congregation could ask the people to withdraw their resignations, or they could be re-elected.

Mr Stewart move)— “That the resignations be accepted.” Mr John Anderson seconded the proposition. Mr Morton proposed—“ That those who have resigned be rrquested to withdraw their resignations,” They had rn r signed because of certain accusations being made against them. Mr Phillips .seconded the amendment, and on U being "put there were six for it and seven against it.

The rev. Chairman declared the motion accepting the resignations carried. Mr Russell proposed, and Mr Grin seconded—“ That Mr Gray be re-elected to, the seat he had vacated on the Committee."

' Mr Uraysaid tliat if the motion he proposed at, last meeting had been put, ail would have been well, but as it was not he felt it his duty to resign. He telt there was a wish for a change, and therefore he would decline to stand. He would work as well as ever.

Mr Smith proposed —That Mr Blyth be re-elected..’ 1

Mr JBlyth declined, as he did not think it would bo to the interest of the Church. The rev. Chairman advised the congregation to appoint a day on which "they would bring 7 names on a slip of paper. Each person could bring a slip of paper with such names as he desired to vote for on it.

Mr Steward proposed, and Mr Russell seconded, a proposition to adopt this coprse.

The Chairman said that on the 29t>> of •' August the election would lake place. Every person over 16 years who had paid their dues to the church within the last ' year would be in a position to vote. In reference to the supply in the pulpit, what happened was this; The Committee asked him to appoint the Rev. Mr

Cec'l for six months. He could not appoint him for more Unn one month without Urn pimotion of the Presbytery, hut he couM apuoint him from month to month. If they unpointed him for six months they eoul-i not consider any r other applications during that t'me, He would a-k th mto make a motion on the subject. He had heard only of two ministers who "old be likely to apply. Mr Stewart proposed—" That the Rev. Mr Cecil bo a permanent supply for three months.”

Mr Morton asked could they hear candidates in the meantime.

The Chairman said they could, but that would involve paying two ministers—Mr Cecil and the candidate.

Mr Stewart’s motion was seconded by Mr Rout, and, after some further conversation, Mr Cecil was appointed for three months.

The Rev. Mr Cecil said he could remain ..my until the third week in October. The Chairman said that would do, and dm being all the business, the meeting concluded with the Benediction.
