I would advise that tenders be called for this work during the spring months.—l am, etc., “ W, Bhbskb, : “ Overseer to the Board.” The Overseer’* action re Mr Sharp’s application was approved of; it was decided to call tenders for the work at Seebie’s bridge; also for tbe work in con* nection with Mr Wreathnll’s application, andifor the repairs to the road leading to Fairfield Bush. KHIDCB ovvr THE OPINI. MrW. Pdstlethwaits waited upon'the Board P* the Opihi bridge, which it was proposed to erect. He had got an opinion from those' who lived near it rh't it was a piece of extravagance; also, he : would ask the Board to consider -in constructing bridges whether it was desirable to construct them of wood. It was' hoped that if the bridge was built the piles would be of iron. He j instanced the Winchester bridge, which, although not an old one, already needed rebuilding, and on behalf of the ratepayers in the district generally he objected to the.bridge being built. As the minty Council met the day following (Wednesday), it Was felt that some steps should be taken before that meeting took place. It was not only the construction of the bridge, but the future maintenance, that would fall so heavily on the ratepayers, upon whom the rates were already beginning to press heavily, Mr Byrne Bayley also waited upon the Board with regard to the Opihi bridge. He stated he was to have come with Mr Postlethwaite, but was unable to do so. His views on tbe matter entirely coin* tided with, those of Mr Postlethwaite. — Mr Bayley having retired, the Chairman stated be felt divided upon the question. He did net see that the whole of the iWncliff district should be left without a bridge to get their stock, etc., out; He thought they were certainly entitled to a stock clerk was also appealed. to with regard to the relative durability of iron and wooden piles. He stated that in his experience iron-bark and iron piles weuld last about an equal length of timej, that, is if the real ironbark Was obtained, but his, objection to wooden piles was that being so large they gathered weeds, drift wood, etc;, and so caused the course of the river to ehange, while the iron piles being so much' smaller did not catch , drifting material, arid therefore were not so liable tocauae the river to change.—Mr Grant also thought the people of the district were entitled to some sort of a bridge.— After a desultory conversation, it was resolved - upon the proposition of Mr Kelland, seconded by Mr Grant “That in:view of the strong feeling shown against the proposed bridge over the Opihi ’ river ?at Raincliff, this Board would respectfully request the County Council not to proceed with the work for another month ; should the Council agree, however, hot to postpone the work, the Board is of opinion that a stock bridge only should be erected. “ • DEPUTATIONS. Mr B. H. Pearpoint attended on behalf of the Town Board with reference to the action of the latter re the drill shed, and asking the Road Board to indemnify them against any action they had taken. -—Agreed to. Mr Niel, Raukapuka Bush, attended with regard to some pigs that were running at large and damaging the road near, his property so as to prevent him driving along that way. The pigs he stated belonged to Mr Taylor,. who had professed his inability to do anything •with them.—lt was decided to write to Mr Taylor, instructing him to keep the pigs from trespassing, Mr W, Gould waited upon the Board, and stated- that be wished to burn the tussock off his land adjoining the Board’s reset re, and asking the Board to take some steps to prevent the fire spreading to the reserve,—The Board were- of opinion that Mr Gould should plough up a furrow or two to keep the fire from running in that direction. They thought that they had nothing to do with tbe matter ; he should take tbe ordinary precautions that he would take as between neighbors.—Mr Gould wanted the Beard to take the responsibility upon their shoulders, which they declined to do.— Mr Postlethwaite pointed out that Mr Gould could not expect the Board to take ' any action in the matter, as it was entirely for his benefit the work was to be done,—-M r Gpuld said he would send them a note repudiating his liability, and that he would spend Os 8d before .he would accept the liability. He did not think it fair that the whole weight of the matter should fall on his shoulders. —The Board advised him to spend the 6s 8d in get-tine a man to help him, and tbs thing would -be done.—Mr Gould then withdrew, new pound. A letter was read from Mr D, McKenzie, stating the estimated cost af the new pound and cottage to be £ —. The plans and specifications, which had also been’ prepared by Mr McKenzie, were laid npon the table. The Chairman thought .it would be folly to spend half the amount they were raising in rates for the' purpose of building a new pound, but ho thought that the poundkeeper should . look after wandering cattle more strictly. FIANTINQ. The Chairman asked if the Board Intended to take any steps with regard to painting, as this was the proper time for such work. ; The Clerk stated that as far as he knew the Board had no reserves open for planting just now. Aopopuys. Accounts to the amount of £174 2s 4d were passed for payment, and the Board , adjourned. ~
