At the Supreme Court, Wellington, in the case of Hollister ▼. Accident Insurance Company of New Zealand, the Attorney-General for the Company argued that the amount of the policy could not bo recovered, as,notice of the accident which caused the death of Hollister had not bpe.n given within seven days as required % the policy. Mr Justice Richmond asked whether such a condition would stand in a case where a person disappeared, and it was not known for some time afterwards that ho was dead. The Attorntty-General said that it appeared to be so. His Honor replied that if the public were aware of that state of things, he did not think that a company insuring against accidents would do much business, His Honor entered up judgment for the defendants. A deputation from the Wellington Hotel and Properly Protection Society waited on Mr Johnston and ths 00-ageots of the Union Insurance Company at Wellington on Friday with reference to the services of Mr' Mcßae in connection with the recent eruptions at Wairoa. Mr Johnston received the deputation very courteously, and promised to do all in his power to favorably represent Mr Mcßae’s case to the Board of Directors.
A valuable discovery has been made at the Oliver range, West Const. Several large lodes of ore containing white malleable metal were found by Dougins, the well known explorer. Samples have been sent to Dr Hector for analysis. Jss. Farquhar was committed for trial at Christchurch on Friday, for damaging his brother-in-laws’s property to the value of over £6.
The bodies of Cameron and the boy Hansen, who wer* buried by the fall of the tunnel at Kawarau Gorge (Otago), were recovered on Thursday. The man was not disfigured much, bat the boy was fearfully crushed. Ths dress of Mrs McDonald, wife of a ship carpenter at Dunedin, caught tire while she was burning some rubbish, and not noticing it she went outside, when it biased up aud burned her so seriously that her recovery is doubtful. Professor Thomas, with Lundin as a guide, succeeded in getting to the lip of the crater at the bottom of Tarawera mountain. He states that the crater in Rotomahana is muah more extensive than formerly. In crossing over the fissures quantities of steam and an effusion of oxide of iron and other materials impregnated the air to such an extent as to nearly stifle them. Professor Thomas describes the craters nnd geysers up to near Okara lake as in full operation and grand in the extreme. He intends making a second journey, Mr Robinson, of the firm of McKeone and Robinson, contractors for the first section of the Midland railway, arrived at Christchurch on Friday from Australia, via Wellington. As he loft England before the contract with his firm was definitely settled, he will await the arrival of instructions on the subject by the mail.
Sergeant Anderson and Constable Franklyn arrested eight natives on a charge of stealing eight pigs from the property of Mf Walter Stoddart, in the bush about six miles from Manaia. The first information obtained by Superintendent Thompson regarding the man supposed to be Caffrey, was received from a settler at Awhetu (Auckland). He crossed the harbor to Cornwallis, He said he came from the Themes asd again from Rotorua, Constables are scouring the Waitakerei Ranges, Manukau Heads, and the Kaipara Head settlements. The Pettier declared fie identified Caffrey by the photo shown to him.
