THE HOME ELECTIONS.
London, July 15. Mr Gladstone, in closing an angry correspondence which has taken place between himself and the Duke of Westminster, threatens the abolition of the aristocracy, unlesa their acts are governed with more wisdom than hitherto. Lord Salisbury is anxious that Lord Hsrtmgton should accept the office of Premier, he himself taking the portfolio of Foreign Affair*, Lord Randolph Churchill suggests that Mr Chamberlain and himself should stand out, but even yet it is unlikely that such a coalition will be effected. It is expected that Mr Gladstone will tender hi* resignation shortly. July T 6. The Times is urging the Marquis of Hartington, the Duke of Argyle, Sir Henry James, Mr Goshen, and Mr Trevelyan to form a coalition party. July 17. 1 he whole elections wre nowcompleted and have resulted in the return of: Conservatives, . 316 ; Unionists, 78 ; Gladstonites, 191 ; Parnellites, 85. A petition has been lodged against the return of Mr Alexander McArthur for the Buckrnse division of Yorkshire. Sir Evelyn Ashley, who was Undersecretary for the Colonies in the previous Gladstone administration, has been defeated. It is expected that the Ministry will tender their resignations immediately, but it is considered unlikely that a coalition will b» effected between the Conservatives and Unionists. Lord Granville has an nounced his iuLnlion of retiring into private life, Ihe Marquis of Hartington has declined to accept Mr Gladstone’s suggested modifications of the Home Rule proposals. Mr G'adslone’s letters to the Press indicate a tendency to a repeal of-the Union and to abolish the House of Lords. Mr Uoldwin Smith asks whether a man in such a state of mind as Mr Gladstone is in is fit to govern Ireland, The Times denounces Mr travesties as baseless charges against his opponent!. It also considers that be attacks many of his old friends. Many of the English journals follow in the same strain, and say that the vulgarity of his epithets is turning Ida defeat into personal humiliation.
