The Princess of Wales gave a garden party to-day at Marlborough House in honor of the colonial visitors. The Queen was present, and many colonists were presented to Her Majesty. July 11.
M. De Lesseps has abandoned the proposal to issue lottery bonds for the purpose of carrying on the Panama C»nal, Other bonds will, however, be issued for the amount originally proposed.

On Wednesday next the Bishop of London will open the British and Colonial Temperance Congress. Sixty-thousand repeating rifles have been served to the French troops.
I lie Due d’Aumale notifies that he will legally resist the removal of his n»mi' from the army list by the French Government. The Russian Government have explained to the other Powers that Batoum, in the Black Sea, will remain a commercial, though not a military,
port. The National Rifle Association have arranged that the highest scorer at the first stage of the Queen’s prize at Wimbledon shall receive a medal and badge in the Alexandra prize distribution.
At Wimbledon to-day, in the contest for the Windmill prize, Captain Blackshaw, of New South Wales, scored 32 points for seven shots at 200 yards. The Tasmanian loan of £1 ,000,000 has been covered twofold, there being 330 tenderers. Those at £99 13s 6d receive 38 per cent, The average is £99 18s.
The oranges by the Potosi are in fair condition, and are selling at an average price of 9s per case. Mr R. H. Watt, Solicitor for Now South Wales in London, and Mr Fleming, agent for the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, were present at the meeting between Uir Charles Tupper and the Agents-General. Mr Fleming explained that £2,500,000 would be required to lay a cable between Vancouver Island and New Zealand, or Queensland ; also that a subsidy of £67,000 would be required from the colonies and England, and he believed that the latter country was likely to contribute a third of the subsidy, provided that Government business was free if it did not exceed the amount subsidy.
