THE N.S.W. RAILWAY FRAUDS.
In the New South Wales Assembly on July 3, the railway frauds in connection with the carriage of wool were again referred to by Mr Abigail, who asked whether any summonses had been issued end the names of the persons proceeded against. The Attorney-General replied that criminal proceedings had been initiated against a person occupying a high position, and that it was necessary to exercise great care in the matter. A summons had been issued that evening against Messrs Wright, Heaton and Co., Messrg; Pearman, Wright and Co., and Lee and McAlister. Some other case* might, perhaps, be dealt with at a later date, but it was not wise at present that the names should be divulged. The informations issued state that the Commjssioper pf Railways has grounds for believing that the parties named, at various times extending from 1880 to 1816, conspired to cheat and defraud the said Commissioner. The amounts are not mentioned in the summons, but it is understood that the loss incurred by the department by the frauds, which extend over eight years, amount to between SIB, OOO and £15,000.
