ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, July 3. It is stated to be improbable that Hanlan will come to England to take part in any rowing contests. July 4. Despatches on the New Hebrides question show that the English Government were not wanting in dignity and Strength. Mr Berry demanded protection against an armament in the Pacific Islands, on the ground that such is menacing to the colonies, and contrary to treaties, and likely to cause anxiety daring times of war. In hi« speech at the Imperial Federation League banquet, Lord Rosebery spoke of Mr Dailey as a man who bad “genius to conceive, and patriotism to carry oaf,” the recent expedition to the Soudan. He said that the consent of New South Wales to contribute towards the cont of establishing an Imperial pava] defence scheme was a step of magnitude and importance, which it would be impossible to overrate. . j H.M.S. Terror has seized two more American fishing smacks, July 5. The Agents-General, Executive Commissioners, and several prominent colonists were entertained to-day at luncheon in Windsor Castle, and a reception was afterwards held by Her Majesty’s in Ht. George’s Hall, which was largely attended, most of: the members of the Royal family being present. Shaw’s cricketing team leave by the Arizona on the 17ih September, W. G. Grace demands £1,500 if he joins Mr Ward’s cricket team. Paris, July 4. The Due d’Aumale has been removed from the French army list by order of the Government, Brindisi, July 5. An alarming increase of cholera is reported through the city and throughout the province. The New Zealand Shipping Company, Limited, have received the following cable message, dated London, July 3rd, 1886 R.M.S. Rimutaka sailed to-day from Plymouth, with mails and passengers, for New Zealand, calling at Madeira and Cape of Good Hope en route.
