INTERVIEWS. Mr Prattley interviewed the Board to sea'whether the Board would clean the drain on the Lower Swamp road. He alab complained of the Canal drain coming from Mr Paterson’s. Qn account of this drain there was a chain of water in his paddock last autumn. He would be satisfied to pay one-fourth of the cost.— It waa decided to do the first-named work provided, Mr Ackroyd agrees to pay ooe-fourtb; and with regard to the ttcond, the Overseer was Instructed to ■ee the place, and ascertain whether the new works carried out recently have not already met the case. Mr'W.oodhead waited on the Board, asking a- that drain near his place ha "cleaned. He would pay bis share of onefourth of the cost. He also asked for some, pipes for the gateway. —With regard to the cleaning of the drain, it was decided that tb* work should be done, god the Overseer was ordered to see into the second request, and grant pipes if necessary. TOWNSHIP OF ABOWHINUA. la compliance with the resolution passed at last meeting, the Overseer laid on the table the following statement with regard to the amount of money spent in the above township ; Pate. £ b. d. 1878— Cleaning Creek through Township 319 16 0 „ Concrete Bridge over creek in Wilkin street 260 0 0 1879 Bridge over Creek, Maude street ... 101 8 0 Formation of Studbolme street ... ... ... 60 0 0 1880— Shingling Denmark street and Forming Footpaths 95 8 6 „ Footpath, Wilkin street.,, 414 0 1881 — Formation part Alexandra street ... ... ... 11 17 6 1882— Shingling Denmark street 34 7 6 1883— Formation Maude street 17 13 6 ISB4—Formation Alexandra street ... ... ... 13 15 0 „ Footpath Denmark street 10 2 6 „ Footpath Wilkin street... 414 O 1885—Footpath and Shingling ' Studbolme street ... 10 10 7
All work alluded to in this statement has been dona solely to open up and improve, the Township. Sou will see the amount expended on High street and North Town Belt ia not included. Regarding the bridges, I may state that the onejji street is a concrete arch 12ft* span, 20ft. wide between the parapet walls. The one on Maude street has concrete abutments and wing waits, with timber top and handrail; it is 14ft. .span, and 18ft. wide in the clear, Mr Talbot said be was astonished at amount of money spent there, and jit there was more to bo added. The concrete that went to construct the bridges had been supplied by the Board, and was not included ;in the contract, Tho price of the concrete would have to be added.
The Overseer said there was no record of the quantity of concrete used, Mr Qtyinn said a rough estimate of the pqncretp used could bp ipado. He also noticed that the bridge near Aokroyd ! s apd the Town Belt Road had not been charged, He thought these ought to be included.
The Overseer explained that the reason he did not include these works wa* because he thought they were more for the benefit.of the district than the town. The Chairman quite agreed with this.
Mr. Quinn said that the cost of clearing the drain was a fair charge to make against the Town of Arowhenua. It was a typrk of necessity, and ought to be charged. The Chairman read the clause of the Act bsaring on the subject. Thp money *as given for “ The pojwtruction of roads within, or to open HP, the block far the benefit of the selectors." Ihe
question was whether they could claim the money for clearing the drain. Mr Quinn thought they could. The clearing of the drain waa a necessary work, and ought to be included. Mr Talbot thought so too. It was a work for opening up the place. The Act was only passed laat year, but he might say that there was a similar clause in former Acts, and it was owing to an oversight they had not got the money for these works already. They must make a more complete statement of what they would charge to the Township. After some further remarks the matter dropped, it being understood that a complete statement sheuld be made out, and forwarded to the Government. overseer's report.
The Overseer’s report was then read as follows; “ To the Chairman,
“Sir,—l have to report for the past mouth as follows; — '‘Tendershave been called for clearing the Canal drain, from Boiling Down road to the Middle Swamp road. “Contract No 38, shingling Kakahu road, has been finished by D. Dunn. “Contract No, 60, cleaning Canal drain, Orari; The cheque for this work is passed, to be held until I see the work again. “ Seven thousand and eighty-two feet of black pine decking haa been delivered. This completes the contract, but I would recommend the Board to take more if the contractor will supply it, as the timber is of good quality and could not be cut at a better time of the year. “The culvert on Paterson’s road is finished with the exception of painting the handrailing. I have not yet taken up the culvert across the Middle Swamp road, as 1 think before this is done it will be necessary to enlarge the drain from the new culvert to the creek.
“The matter complained of by Mr Murray at Orari has been remedied, “ A 2ft 6in barrel culvert. haa been built on the Waitohi Terrace road. Some filling in, and about 50 yards of shingle are required to complete this work.
“Two fords on Kirk’s road require some improvements, “ Some, slight shijgle repairs are required on the Kakahu road between Mr John Hay’s, and the Boundary road. “ Re Canal drain and road; I find this drain is not large enough to carry all the water during heavy rain. There are about 46 chains between the bridge and the Milford road that would require to be enlarged. Above the bridge tho drain would require enlarging and deepening in places for about 60 chains. “There are about 23 chains of the road above the bridge nearly impassable ; this portion would require to be clayed. It would require 25 yards of clay to the chain to make a fairly good track 14 feet wide. The clay could probably be obtained from the ditch between Milford road and the bridge.—l have, etc., “ F. Archer.”
It was decided, as recommended by the Overseer, to get 5000 feet more timber, if it could be got at contract price ; to defer the Middle Swamp road culvert and the enlargement of the drain till next month, to ascertain cost;,the fords on Kirk’s road to be done ; the shingle on the road between Mr John Hay’s and the Boundary road to be attended to; the Canal drain to stand over for further consideration. TENDER*. Tenders were opened as follows ; Contract No. 62—Clearing Canal Drain—T. Washington, £3 15s (accepted) ; M. Flaherty, £6 ss. SUPPER? BRIDGES. Mr Canavan said there were some complaints about some bridges in the Rangitata district being very slippery on frosty mornings. The Overseer said several complaints had been made about the Opihi bridge; He suggested putting soma sand on it. Mr Quinn said he went over it every morning, and never experienced any difficulty. The matter dropped, and the Board adjourned.
