Thu Mail Seeyices.—The sett cost to the Colony last year of the direct steam gerric# was £5,552 13s 9d. The shortest time within which mails hate been delivered in London has been 38 days, and in the colony 42 days. Some exceptionally fast steaming has been accomplished —37 days 9 hours from Wellington to Plymouth, and 89 days 13 hours from Plymouth to Port Chalmers, including stopages, hare been the best performances. Tha San Francisco service resulted lest year in a profit to the colony of £432 12s 4d, compared with a deficit of £7736 10s 7d the previous year. The result is due to exceptional causes, but as this year the subsidy has been reduced from £31,250 t« £23,344, the loss for the current year, if any should be small.
