Colonel McDonnell, who recently received the New Zealand Cross for acts of bravery in the Maori war, has received by the San Francisco mail a congratulatory message from General Cameron, und«r whom he served. General Cameron gays that he cannot conceive anyone more justly entitled to it than Colonel McDonnell, for undertaking the reconnaissance which ipok him into the mid-it of the Maoris, from whom,' had he been taken, he could expect no mercy. He continues that Colonel McDonnell, and that gallant officer Major Von Tempskey, gave proof of that cool delibeirtte kind of courage which is so much more rare than the bravery displayed in the heated excitement of batiiie and whichftie so much mow frequently recognised.
