A VIRGINIA TRAGEDY.

A despatch from Maitinsville, Virginia, of May 17th, saya.—No greater tragedy has occurred in Virginia in a decade than thai which occurred in this towa at a late hour on Saturday. The night preceding an anonymous circulnr was issued and posted all over the plaee, seriously reflecting on W. C. Terry, a young business man and his father. The latter, 0. M. Terry, is a prominent citizon. On the 17tb, W. 0. Terry telegraphed for his two brothers living at a skin station 20 miles away. They arrived at 1 p.m., and after a brief consultation went to the printing offiice, and demanded the name of the author of the obnoxious card. The printer told them that it was Colonel P. D. Spencer, a member of the town board, and a leading business man. The same evening, soon after the tobacco factories had closed for the day, and the streets were filled with operatives returning from their work, the Terry brothers started in the direction of Spencer's factory. When half way tboy were met by Speneer, with his brother, and several friends. W. F. Terry addressed a few words to Spencer, who told him not to shoot. Just then some one fired a pistol. Forty ahota followed. When a summing up was made, W. C. Terry was found shot in the abdomen ; Ben Terry through the neck ; Spencer in the hip ; Tarleton Brown, his business partner, in the groin. B. S. Jones, saloon-keeper ; R. L. Gregory, hotel clerk; Sandy Martin a colored mechanic, were seriously wounded by stray bullets. All the Terrys anal Brown are dead. The Terrys belonged to an old family, and occupied a high social position.
