The annual meeting of the Temnka Licensing Committee was held last Thursday. Present—Messrs J. Talbot (Chairman), Paterson. Wheelband, and Meyer. The action of the Chairman in granting a temporary transfer of the license of the Royal Hotel to Mrs Heap was confirmed.—Mr Aspinall appeared for the applicant.—With regard to the bouse, Constable Morton reported that the rooms bad been enlarged, that the accommodation was most satisfactory, and that the police bad no objection. The license was granted. Richard Young was granted a license for the Winchester Hotel. The renewal of the licenses of the Temnka Hotel (Mr Chamberlain), Wallingford Hotel (Mr Coira), Star Hotel (Mr AngUnd), Orari Hotel (Mr Bradley), end Wolseley Hotel (Mr Young), was granted. With regard to the Crown Hotel, Temuka, Mr Aspinall said that at last meeting it was understood that the house would have to be improved. Plans bad been prepared, and Mr Hayhurst, the proprietor of the house, was ready to go on at once.—The Chairman said that at last meeting the licensee was warned that unless some improvement was immediately made the license would be in danger of being cancelled. — Mr Aspinall said there was some diffi culty as to title. The lease was first made ont to t&enning, then transferred to Kirk, and then to Bertib, and there was some difficulty over it. Now that was all settled, and he would submit the plans of the new buildings, which it was intended to erect.
The plans were then submitted to the Committee and explained bj Mr West, architect, Timarn. After baring examined them the Chairman said it would be necessary in granting this license to stipulate as to the time the work would be taken in band.—Mr Hayhnrst said he was ready to begin at once,—ln reply to the Chair man Mr West said it would take five or six months to build the house,—The Committee granted a renewal of the license on conditioc that the building would be begun before next quarterly meeting, and that it would be finished six months later—that is, nine months from the present time, Mr Aspinall, on behalf of Mr Chamberlain, applied for leave to pot bis light out after eleven o’clock at night. The Licensing Committees of Timaru ami Geraldine had allowed this to be done. The town was lighted up now by the street lamps and there was no necessity for the hotel lights being kept burning. —Constable Morton objected on the ground that the street lights were pat ont at 11 o’clock. If the Committee
bad power to order the town lamps to be kept burning he would not obj*ct.— Mr Chamberlain said they paid a heavy license fee, and rates, and he did not s p e why they should be taxed like this.— After some farther remarks on the subject it was decided to defer taking any action in the matter until next quarterly meeting. This being all the business the meeting adjourned.
