AROWHENUA TOWNSHIP.

TO TUB BDITOB.

Sir,— Will you kindly allow mo space in your valuable paper for a few remarks. 1 saw in your issue of the 3rd inst, that the Road Board received a letter from the Land Office, and that it was freely discussed, and was highly pleasing to some, if 1 may judge from the way in which they wanted to get the money from us. To think of Mr Quinn, a resident and one who signed the petition, asking for money for a road that has' been made years ago ; and Mr Hayhurst wanting money fir Repairs, he holding freehold property and having land in this township 1 And yet, Mr Editor, they would take money from us for work douo out of the district. Now, Mr Editor, if I had done what those worthies bare, I would never take office in that township. I see they came to the conclusion to look up the accounts, and find out bow much they have spent in the Tillage Settlement, Now, Mr Editor, Ido not see anything about looking to see how much money they , have had in rates from us. In my Opinion, the amount of rates is worth more than the work that has been done, for there is neither water-table or crown to the roads. I see, Mr Editor, that our Temuka friends would like to get some money from us in the shape of rates, if they could make ns believe we are in danger of the river, but we are color blind, and cannot see the red light. Of course, this was all done with a kind and Ghristian-liko feeling, judging by the way in which Mr Blyth spoke of the Sod Town creek. Now, Mr Editor, it is not long since there were nearly £IOO spent in trying to find a way to get the water through Temuka, and now they want £2OO to keep it out. Surely it is all a farce I Now, 1 would like to ask you a question touching on yonr sub-article of the sth inst. If you were in a beseiged town and had an acknowledged sympathising friend, and if this friend knew of a weak place in the walls and went op in a balloon and proclaimed it in the hearing of the enemy as well as you, don’t you think you would be tempted to fire a shot into that balloon and let the gas out.—l am, etc., G. Edqeler, B.C.A.

[Mr Edgeler has no need to complain of the action of the Road Board. Tbe Board behaved well in not opposing the petition, for if they had it is possible that it would not be granted.—Tm Editor.]
