The selection of the successor to Dr Moorhouse as Bishop of Melbourne ha a been postponed until the Bth June. May 27Mr Graham Berry has requested the Secretary of State for the Colonies to furnish him with a definite statement of the intention of the Government with regard to the proposal for the annexation of the New Hebrides by the French Government. Earl Granville has promised to accede to the request and to famish Mr Berry with a written reply. The exhibits of apples and pears grown in New South Wales hare been awarded a medal at a meeting of the Royal Horticultural Society.
May 28. It is doubtful what will he the effect of the proposals made by Mr Gladst >ne to modify certain clauses of the Irish Government Bill, on condition that the second reading should be agreed to and further consideration of the bill then be deferred until the autumn session. The Whig lection, led by the Marquisof Hartington, are In no way influenced by Mr Gladstone's proposal and continue firm in their opposition to the measure, but the Radicals are wavering, and it is at present doubtful what course Mr Chamberlain will follow.
