PAINFUL OCCURRENCE.

A man named Thomas Raine died at Geraldine on Tuesday last under very painFnl circumstances. Deceased was in the employment of Mr Turner, cordial manufacturer, who carries on business at the rear of Mr R. S. Cook’s chemist shop. About 12 o’clock on Tuesday deceased went to Mr Cook and obtained a bottle (containing about 21 ounces) of spirits of wine, which is need in the manufacture of ginger ale. About an hour and a half later he came back, smilingly stated to Mr Cook that he had dranu the whole of the spirits. In a few minutes he became insensible, and Mr Cook immediately administered an emetic, sent away for Dr Fish, and had deceased removed to the Crown Hotel. Dr Fish came with all speed, and found Raine in a state of collapse. The stomach pump was applied, and everything done that could be to save the unfortunate man’s life, but he never rallied, and died about, ten minutes past eight the same evening. From the first Dr Fish gave very little hope of his recovery. Deceased was a man of about 40 years of age, and addicted to drink. His parents reside in Christchurch, where he leaves a wife and two grown np daughters. An inquest will be held to-day.
