SUICIDE OF LORD SHAFTESBURY.
The Earl of Shaftesbury killed himself in a cab while riding through Regent street, London, on April 13th, by discharging the contents of a revolver into his person. He fired the first shot tit his temple but missed his aim. The cabman then descended from his seat, and refused to proceed further, as he feared he would be shot. Lord Shaftesbury tried to persuade him to continue the drive,: and offered him £5, but the man was immovable. By this time a policeman, who bad heard the shot fired, approached the cab, and at this moment the Earl fired again, the ball taking effect in his temple. The policeman tried to seize his am to prevent his firing but failed, and death ensued in ten minutes after the second shot. Lord Shaftesbury leaves a widow, a son, tmd five daughters. The Earl latterly had been unwell and complained of mental depression.
