ELECTION OF THE GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.
Very great interest wns taken in ithe Road Board election at Geraldine last Friday, and there was a large number of ratepayers present when the Returning Officer, Mr C. E. Shorratt, declared the result shortly before 8 o’clock.
Messrs F. R. Flatmau, John Kelland, W. U. Slack, R. H. Postlethwaite, and Lewie Grunt having been declared elected (as stated in our last issue,) Mr Fktman was called for, but as he was not present, Mr Kelland was asked to speak. Mr Kelland said ho would not detain them very long. He wished to thank the ratepayers for the position in which they had placed him. Ho concluded from the fact of his being returned again that be must be giving satisfaction, and it would be his earnest endeavor to give satisfaction so long as he remained in office. So Ipng as he was in the district he would do his best to mete out justice to everyone. He again thanked them very earnestly for the position in which they had placed him, and he hoped they would never have cause to regret their confidence He was sorry, however, that their Old friend, Mr Deßenzy, was left out. The Board had all worked together most harmoniously, and he was very sorry Mr Deßenzy had not been re-elected.
Mr R. H. Postlethwaite thanked the ratepayers for the honorable position- in which they had placed him. It had beer! his endeavor to do what he could for the whole district. His interest was in the whole district, not simply in one portion of it. So long as be thought a thing was right he would try to carry it out.
Mr Sberralt read a letter from Mr Flatman apologising for his absence and promising, in the event ot his re-election, to do his best for the interests of the ratepayers.
Mr Deßenzy thanked those who had voted for him, also those who had voted against him. He had been defeated, and he could, he hoped, accept his defeat with a good grace. Ho should always take a keen interest in the welfare of the district. He had a much larger stake in the district now than he had formerly, as he was now running the place on bis own account whereas formerly he had been an agent. Mr Grunt shortly addressed those present, thanking them for the honor conferred, upon him. He hoped they might never rue the step they bad taken. He would do his utmost to give them satisfaction.
Mr 'V. Posflefchwaite apologised for tl<e absence of Mr Slack on account of his health, and at the request of the latter gentleman thanked those present who had placed him in the position he occupied. He (Mr Postlethwaite) was certain that Mr Slack would do his best in the future for the ratepayers. At the instance of Mr Deßenzy a hearty vote of thanks was given to the Returning Officer, Mr 0. E. Sherratt, and the procaedinga terminated.
