The Temuka Leader. TUESDAY, MAY 11, 1886. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

To Correspondents.— Mr P. McShane’s letter wil' appear in our next issue. A Maori Centenarian. — A Maori woman died at the Kaiupoi Native pa on Thursday, named Veta Whataitaua, whose age is claimed to be 108 years, if not more. Geraldine Licensing Committee. —The annual meeting of the Geraldine Licensing Committee takes place in the Courthouse at noon'on the 9lh June next. Census Returns. —The census returns for the Mount Peel Riding of the Geraldine County show the population to be 439, 254 being males and 185 females. The population for the County of Geraldine is now 16,994, the males numbering 8,831 and the females 8,163. District Court, Timaeu.— ■ At the District Court, Titnaru, on Friday last, the order of discharge of James McDonald, a bankrupt, was suspended for six months. Mrs Hall was granted letters of administration in the estate of the late Henry Cain. Mr White was granted probate of the wills in re J. Crocker and James Eagen, deceased. Land Board. —At a meeting of the Crown Lands Board on Thursday last, an application from Henry Rodgers to purchase section 727, Arowjienua Village Settlement, was received, but the Board decided to put-the section up to auction. A list of deferred payment selectors in arrears with their instalments was banded in, and the Board ordered immediate steps to be taken for getting in the arrears.

Batbpaters’ Meeting at Geraldine.— In our report of the ratepayers’ meeting at Geraldine on Tuesday last it was stated that Mr Sherratt said “he thought an Act had been passed by Government abolishing subsidies to local bodies:” This wus incorrect, Mr Sherratt stating that “if the ratepayers intended to strike a rate to secure the QoI vernment subsidy it was desirable to do it at an early date, because there was a possibility that the subsidy to local bodies may be abolished at the next session of Parliament.” Presbyterian Church, Temuka.—Tenders are invited in our advertising columns for certain repairs, etc., to the Temuka Presbyterian Church. The work will include the replacement of the present shingle roof with one of ooirugated iron. Both the interior and exterior of the building are to be repainted, the seats and other fittings rerarnishtd, and the plaster repaired. Tenders close on Friday next, and the work is expected to be finished within a month. The renovations should make a very marked improvement in the appearance of the church.

Town IMPROVEMENTS.— The surface-men of the Geraldine Town Board made a 31 art yesterday morning with the asphalt and kerbing which the Board decided to have carried out. When completed, this work will be a great boon to the pedestrians, and add considerably to the neatness of the streets. If the weather continues fine, the woik will not take long to complete. Thb Circus Ax Geraldine. — St, Leon’s Circus and Menagerie opened in Geraldine last Saturday evening, the tent being well filled. The performance was an excellent one and gave every satisfaction, but as it was similar to that given at Temuka on Friday nigh’ j and commented on in our issue of Saturday last, it is unnecessary to give a detailed report. The Circus appeared in Ashburton lust, night. Accident. — Mrs Chiverson, of Geraldine, had a narrow escape from being seriously injured on Saturday night. While returning home from the circus, some man, who was riding along the road, ran over her, knocking her down and severely bruising her. Fortunately no bones were broken. The person who ran over her was mean-spirited enough to go on without ascertaining what mischief he had done. R.M. Court, Temuka. —At the R.M. Court, Temuka, yesterday, before A. M. Clark and K. F. Gray, Esqs., J.P.s, Thomas Watson, charged with having been drunk, was fined 10s or the usual alternative. James Bodman, similarly charged, was mulcted in the sum of ss. John Bnen, charged with having been drunk and disorderly, and also with being a habitual drunkard, was sentenced to six week’s imprisonment without the option of a fine. TIMiBU Races. —On Saturday night the settling up over the late Autumn meeting of the 5.0.J.0. took place. The following are the amounts paid : —P. Butler, £2lO 18s ; J. Stephenson, £190; Hobbs Bros., £142 10s 5 fl. D. Bradley, £9B 16s ; J. E. Pilbrow, £76; G. Rutherford, £23 15s; Crocker, £l4 ss; D, Rutherford, £l4; Stewart, £9 10s ; and Wedderell, £4 les. Grand total, £784 9s. Sx. Saviour’s Church, Temuka.— The annual meeting of the parishioners of the above church was held last night, the rev. the Incumbent presiding. The following officers were elected Incumbent’s Churchwarden, Mr C. J. Rayner; Parishioners’ Churchwarden, Mr R. Pinckney; Vestry, Messrs Gaze, Pilbrow, Langridge, Talbot, Eckford, Benbow, Lee, Wills, Ruddenklau, and Davey, A full report will appear in our next issue.

Narrow Escape. —Mr A.W. McDonald, of Pleasant Valley, had a narrow escape from drowning during the late floods. He was standing on the bank of the Hae-hae-te-moana, watching the swollen river, when the ground suddenly gave way and he was precipitated into a hole in the river eight feet deep. Happily he managed to keep afloat till he was washed down to a shallower part of the stream, when he made his way to dry land, a thorough wetting and the shooK being the only consequences. Football. — A scratch match was played in the Temuka Park on Saturday, sides being chosen by Yelvin (Captain) and Haines (ViceCaptain). The ball was kicked off by Ve.vin, and was smartly returned by Haines, After a few scrimmages, E. Smith took possession of the leather, and by a splendid run secured the first try for the Captain’s side, but no score resulted. On the ball being set in motion again, some splendid play was shown on both sides. E. Smith, by a smart bit, of play, secured another try, but again no score resulted. Haines set the leather rolling, and, after some hard scrimmaging, took possession of it and secured a try for his side. No score resulted. Some good passing wes then indulged in, and both sides worked very hard —in fact, they could not have done better if they had been in an important, match. After some good play by Harte, Blyth, and Dyson, Blyth secured another try for the Vice-Captain’s side. It was entrusted to Harte, who kicked a very neat goal. The ball was kicked off again, and, after some good play on the Captain’s side, it was worked well up into Haines’ quarters, when same really good play was shown. Eventually Velvin got hold of the ball, and by a neat drop-kick secured a goal. It was decided to play for five minutes more, and it was pleasing to see how each side set to work we may say this was the best piece of play shown during the day. The following did good service for their respective sides: —For the Captain's—E. Smith, Stewart, Polasehek, G. Velvin, and J. Velvin; for the V.ceCaptain’s—Harte, Ogilvie, Dyson, Blyth, Haines, and Davis. The scores were as follow : Captain’s side, 8 points; ViceCaptain’s, 6. The team to represent Temuka against Menvale (Christchurch) on the 24:h will be chosen from the following, and they are requested to practice as much as possible: Haines, E. Smith, R. Smith, G. Smith, Harte, Culten, Clinch (2), G. Velvin, Ogilvie, Blyth, Gray, Dyson, Mappison, Shaw, Cross, Stewait, Shallard (3), LeOren, Bethune, Heap, Watt, Reid, D. Smith, J, MoOaskill, McLeod, Polascbek, and J, Velvin, Houssholdbbs’ Meeting at Okabi Bridge. — the annual meeting of householders in the Orari Bridge School district took place on Tuesday evening, the 27th April. The following report of the retiring Committee wus read ; —“To the householdetsof the Orari Bridge School District. — Gentlemen, —Your Committee have again the pleasure of meeting the householders for (he purpose of presenting their annual report. As regards the working of the school, your Committee have every reason to be satisfied. The teaching stuff shows a great interest in the school; to MBs fact the Inspector’s report bearsample testimony,the average passoibeing 65.5 per cent. Your Committee held 17 meetings during their term of office, which wore attended as follows : Lewis Grant 17, Wm. Ashby 15, George Helem 14, Samuel Gould 10, Joseph Wharton 9, Charles Hewson 6, A. Metcalf 4, B. P. Bartrum 1, and Wm. Scully 0. You will also remember that Mr Metcalf and Mr C. Hewson resigned their positions on the Committee and Mr B. Bartrum and Mr Wm. Scully were elected their success irs. We commenced the year with a credit balance of £7 14s 9d in the Bank of New Zealand, and £5 9s lOd due by the children for books, total £l4 4s 7d, and we now hand over to the incoming Committee a balance of £l9 6s 3d in the Bank of New Zealand, Geraldine, and £8 10s due by the children for books, total £27 16s 3d. The number of children on the roll is 52, and your Committee have now no hes’tation in stating that the school is gradually improving. The account books are laid on the tables, duly audited by the Board’s Secretary, Major Bamfield,” The report was adopted. The Chairman (Mr Lewis Grant) then stated their next business was the nomination of candidates for a Committee for the ensuing year. The following was the result of the election: Alex McLean 11 Lewis Grant 10, Wm. Ashby 6, Samuel Gould 5, George Helem 5, Anthony Metcalf 5, Joseph Wharton 4, Charles Hewson 2, Maurice Lawlor 1, The Chairman declared the first seven duly elected members of the Orari Bridge School Committee for the ensuing year. This termna'ed the householder’ meeting, and the newly-, h eted Committee held their first meeting, when Mr L wis Grant was unanimously elected Chairfor the ensuing year.
