SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS.
WOODBURY. At the annual meeting there was a small attendance. The Head Master, Mr Greaves, occupied the chair. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The former showed that the attendance at the school had increased and was still increasing. Messrs Flatmaii/ Dean, Hammond, Heatly, Middlemiss, Gick and Scott were elected a Committee for the ensuing year. At a Committee meeting held subsequently, Mr Dean was re-elected Chairman. Rd £ GITIRA VALLEY. The annual meeting of householders of this school district was held on Tuesday, the 27th of April last. There were present only the seven members of the Committee, and the Chairman, Mr Jphn Talbot, presided.* The following report was read:— “ To the householders of Rangitira Valley. “Gentlemen,—This is the first occasion of an annual meeting of householders being held under the provisions of tjie. Education Act, in this district, and it is a subject for coogr-ilulatien that we are enabled to hold it in a building erected for, and actually in use as, a school. The want of a school had been, greatly felt here for some time, there being several families of children to the neighborhood quite unable by reason of distance to get the benefit of education. The question of getting one erected here was taken up during the month of September last, and was pushed on vigorously to a successful issue by the end of the following February. Mr William Wright generously garo the necessary site, containing one and a-half acres, and the other residents interested alsocontributed by raising a sum sufficient todefray the cost of transfer and to hand the Board of Education £lO towards the erection of the building. The Committee selected Miss Bertha Brown, of the Temuka School, for the position of teacher, and the Board of Education approving the choice, she was duly appointed, and commenced her duties about the first of March. It was anticipated that an average attendance of about 20 would he as much as could be reckoned upon for a commencement. The result, however, proves that we -considerably exceed our estimate, in .this particular, inasmuch as our roll number is now 33, (he average attendance for last week being 30. The building, though | small, is large enough for present requirements ; the cost of it was about £l4O. The room is well and sufficiently furnished, and we have a good supply of maps and oiher echoel requisites. The incidental grant will probably be insufficient to provide for all requirements in the way of fuel, cleaning, etc., and the new Committee may, and probably will, have to ask parents to contribute a trifle for each pupil quarterly to supplement the grant. We have little doubt that the demand, if made, will be willingly complied with. There is at present a sum of £3 in hand, but this is nsufficient to meat expenses already incurred, and the winter coming on just now will necessitate extra expenditure in order to provide for the comfort of the children. The present Committee are Messrs J. Talbot, W. Wright, W. Cook, W. Lyon, W. Telford; Jas. Beattie, and E, O’Neal, all of whom are eligible for re-electien, ‘ ‘ J. Talbot, Chairman.’’ The report was adopted. All the old Committee were re-elected, and (he Chairman was also re-elected for the ensuing year. GERALDINE FLAT. A special meeting of the Geraldine Flat School Committee was held on the ,27th ult,, for the purpose of arranging matters for the meeting of Householders. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed, and other business disposed of. The Master’s last report stated that the average weekly attendance for the past quarter was 42.21. The roll number has lately been increased by the admission of several young ones, and with the exception of two children, now embraces all of school age in (bis district. The pupil teacher continues to perform Ids duties satisfactorily, and the Inspector has just notified the subjects of bis examination in school management. Sewing has received regular attention. The general progress up to the present time is good, and a due part of the syllabus has been V covered with care. One or two scholars, irregular in attendance, cause- waste of time. Seeing the Inspector did not approve of the reading and style of writing in the school—condemned also in the • Inst report of 1884—special attention is ' being given to these subjects. The classes, from the highest, have begun again at the foundation in writing. Leitets have been received from the Education Office, Wellington, anent care in Drawing, and School Libraries, and the master has' procured s-veral books which have been judiciously lent to the pnpils. Two panes of glass and window fixings are’ wanted. The master also asked the Committee to fix the Easter Holidays, if any were to be given. householders’ meeting. A meeting of householders was then held, there being but a poor attendance. Mr A. Rose was voted to the chair. , The Committee’s annual report was read and adopted. “Committee’s report.from February 1885, to April, 1886. “ Gentlemen, -In February,. 1885, on the 28th day of the month, the previous Committee was re elected, and afterwards held their first meeting.
