MISHAP TO THE S.S. TAUPO.
Gisborne, April 28. The 8.8. Taupo, Captain McColl, from Napier to Gisborne with seven passengers, Messrs Whinray, Chutter, Seal ley. Constables Leonard and White, and about 500 tons of cargo, went ashore at 1.30 a.m, on the rocks at Tuahine Point, two and a-half miles to the eastward of Gisborne. The weather at the time was fine, although it was rather a dark night. The sea was smooth, As aoon as the vessel struck rockets were sent up, which were at once observed and preparations made for going to her assistance, Meanwhile the s.s. Ilosina, on her passage (o Tologa Bay, had also seen the rockets, and returned to her assistance. The Rosina, with one passenger and one of the crew, steamed to Gisborne and took off the Collector ot Customs and Harbormaster, who had been making preparations lo proceed to the wn ck. The Taupo was found laying on tbe reef, the same as that touched by the Te Anau some time ago, the aea being perfectly smooth. There was ne exeiiement or danger of life. Preparations were at once made and anchors carried out. Lighters were sent off, and the cargo belonging to her is being discharged. The amount of the damage cannot yet be ascertained. It is thought the ship’s bottom must be much damaged, and the propeller is stripped. Should the weather remain fine, she will probably be, got off at high water. Later. After discharging about 100 tons of cargo, at II a.m. an att-mpt was made to get the Taupo off, which was successful, and she steamed up to the anchorage
