Band of Hops Exhibition.—The annual Industrial Exhibition got up by the South Canterbury United Bands of Hope took piece in Timaru on Monday and T uesday last. The exhibits were of such a character that Mr E. Turnbull, M.H.R. for Timaru, in opening the Exhibition felt constrained to say that the show of articles he saw that day, taking into account the size of the district, compared favorably with the recent Industrial Exhibition at Wellington, The exhibits numbered over 300 and were really very good. They comprised plain and fancy needlework, wax flowers, specimens of plain and ornamental penmanship, drawings, models, bonquets, nuke of various kinds, etc., etc. One noticeable feature was the preponderance in the number of entries sent in by the girls over those sent in by t»« boys, and the latter should bestir thorn-elves and make a better show ‘next year. There were a good many exhibits sent from this district and a very fair proportion of prizes were secured by them. Altogether the promoteis have good cause to he satisfied with the interest taken in the Exhibition, which was a success both as regards the articles exhibited and the visitors who attended it. The following prizes came to Temuka Mies Bertha Brown carried off the second prizes for the best sponge and seed cakes, also the second prize for the best crewelwork apron, worked on satin, and the first prize for the best hand bouquet; Master William Storey took the first prizes for the best map of New Zeeland, and for the British Isles; also the second prize for plain penmanship. Misses Bowker, Maekay and Sherratt, u 11»f Geraldine, were also prizetakers. Miss Andrews’ collection of implements were very much admired, as was also a knited quilt shown by Miss Hamilton. The success which has attended these first exhibits from the district should prove a strong stimulus on all future occasions of a similar nature.
