' ominously, a thick drizzling rain Calling. However, things improved during the day, and fully 350 people were on the ground, The course was in good conditio?, thErain greatly improving it. MrD. Mcllraith, /’ of the Bush Inn, Geraldine,, had a re* freshment booth on the ground, and Mr' Dooley, of the Woodbury Hofei,.a general license booth, and both appeared to do a first-rate badness during the day. Mr Hammond farmed the gates, but doubtless would : hare done ■ much ’ better ' had the weather been finer. Messrs '.. x Mrsoo and Roberts, of Dunedin, had a totilisator on the ground, and were fairly patronised. The racing was splendid and reflected great credit on the hundicapper, Mr T. Corbett. ‘The greatest good humor prevailed on the course, the office bearers cnrryed out their duties efficiently, and everything passed off pleasantly. The Committee having received a communication from: the Secretary to the Canterbury Jockey Club stating that as the nominations and . acceptances exceeded 5 per cent the C.J.C. would disqualify any horses that, ran, very wisely decided to reduce both; and thus did away with any possible cause for unpleasantness. AO the field got away to a good start and jumped well, the three placed horses taking the last hurdle together. Mr Lambert’s Mstagouri, 9st 41b (Butterwortb) 1 Mr Friddle'a Helemore, 7st 81b (Logan) 2 Mr Jones’ Coryphee was scratched. This was a close race from the start. The totalisator showed 4 subscribers, with 12s dividend. Hurry Scurry, for entrance money of 10s fid each. Catch freights. 1 mile. Mr Lambert’s Camerine •M X Seven started. By the time this race was run it was nearly dark, and quite impossible to see the horses at the back of the course. Mr Lambert’s Camerine proved the,winner. • This ended one of the best day s racing that has been held in Woodbury. The total amount passed through the totalisator during the day was £295, During the day Messrs J. Mundell tod Co. sold to Mr H. Qeauey,of Timaru, the racehorse Woodpecker fo* the sum of £l9, and to Mr'William Ashby the wellknown horse Te Kooti, for the sum of£l7. RAGE BALL. In the evening a. ball, was held in the schoolroom, which was well attended. Mr D. Mcllraith was the caterer for the refreshments, Dancing was kept op till well into the morning, and the whole went off with great spirit.
