DUNEDIN STOCK MARKETS.

At the Burnside Yards on Wednesday the following business was transacted Fat Cattle—Tiio market was oversupplied, 282 head being yarded. Onethird of these were fair to good, the balance only very ordinary quality and light we'ghte. Bidding at the commencement of tire sa ! es was fairly spirited, but as they progressed, and towards the close, competition was anything hut active, and last week’s rates were scarcely maintained. This may be accounted for by the large number of the last and previous week’s entries. Best bullocks brought £7 10s to £8 10s; ordinary, £3 to £7 ; cows in proportion.—Mr L. Maclean sold for Mr P. H. McShane (Winchester), ft bullocks trom £4 7s 6d to £o 7s 61 ; for Messrs M’Goveirn and Hardie (Wniinat-), 14 bullocks from £5 10s to £7 15s; for Mr M. Studholmo (Waimate Estate), 14 heifers from £5 12s 6d to £6 15s. Fat Calves—From 15s to 245. Jj..t Sheep-3687 were penned. Of these about 436 were merino wethers, from low to fair average quality ; the balance being crossbreds, representing all conditions, but only a very small proportion being prime. Competition was characterised by extreme dullness, except for the very best quality, which were lower by Is to Is 6d per head ; while inferior and medium could scarcely be placed at reductions of 2a to 2s 6d on last week’s prices. Best crossbreds wethers brought 8s to 9s; one or two pens extra prime quality 10s 6d ; medium, 5s 3d to 7s 6d ; best crossbred ewes, 6s to 7s 9d ; medium, 4s 6d to 5s 9(1 ; merino wethers, 2s to 4s 3d.—Mr L. Maclean sold for Mr M. Studholme (Waimate Estate), 190 crossbreds at from 4s 6d to 7sJ; for Mr 1. M. Rickman (Waimate), 66 crossbreds from 5s 6d to 6s 3d ; for Mr Alex. Potter (Waimate), 63 crossbreds from 5s to 7s ; ,Mor Messrs Reid and Harper (Makikihi), Shropshire Down wethers at ss. '"'Messrs Donald Reid and Co. sold for Mr William Quinn (Makikihi), 97 crossbreds at 8s 3d to 9s (top price).—Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. sold for Mr T. ; Mitchell (Washdyke), 128 crossbred ewes at from 3s 9d to 4s 9d ; for Mr Alex. Humphreys (Temuka), 62 halfbreda wethers at 7s 6d. Fat Lambs—979 penned. Ali these met with a dull market, piicesranging from 2s 6d to ss.—Mr L. Maclean sold for Mr James Puff (Makikihi), 76 at from 4s 6d to 4s 9d ; and for Messrs Reid and Harper (Makikihi), 173 at 3s. Pigs—2sl were yarded, A large portion were stores, which were almost unsaleable. A few porkers sold at 18s to 26s ; bacon pigs, 27s to 86s; suckers and stores, 2a to 4s. Store Cattle—A fair demand exists for well bred quiet cattle. Horse Market—Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. held their weekly sale on Saturday last. A considerable number ■ of country horses came forward for it, but as they were chiefly light and weedy sorts they were difficult to quit, even at low prices. Good young, heavy draughts, of which there were not many in, sold readily at late quotations. On Tuesday last we held a special sale of light-harness colts from Mr William Sibbald’s Lilybapk ,Station, Mackenzie Country. The attendance of buyers was very large, and all the lota changed hands at prices vary- , ing from £3 15s to £l6 per head. The demand fer first-class young draughts and upending light-harness horses coo - but light and weedy sorts can scarcely be given away. ASHBURTON MARKETS. Mr E. G. Stavely, for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, reports on the Ashburton stock sales on Tuesday as follows : Sheep. —At the Ashburton sale on Tuesday 8000 sheep were yarded. A fair proportion of lambsj Values are unchanged. There is a fair demand for stores ; fat sheep are dull. Prices are— Young crossbred ewes 5s ; lambs 2s 2d, 2s 6d, 3s 4d, 3s 9d, 4s ; fat crossbred ewes 5s Cd ; merino do 2s ; aged crossbreds 3s 8d ; cull merino do 6d to lOd. Cattle. —This market is dull. Fat bullocks £5 7s 6d, cows £5 4s ; old bullocks £4. • ENGLISH MARKETS. London, April 20, The wool sales closed to-day. The quantity gold during the series was 280,000 bales. 46,000 bales were held over for next sales. Later, The wool sales have closed with better spirit, although prices were unchanged. The number of bales catalogued during the series was 260,000, and the number reserved was about 30,000. April 21. The third of the series of wool sales will commence on June 16th. The New Zr aland Loan and Mercancantile Agency Company, Limited, have received the following cablegram from their Loudon office, dated London, April 20ib, 1886 : Wool—The sales closed to-day at an average decline of about 10 per cent, on last sales closing rates, except for coarse crossbred and good lambs’ wool, the market for the former being easier, and for the latter firmer. The total quantity sold during the past sales is 230,C00 bales, 46,000 bales have been held over for future disposal. 2000 bales have been taken for America, and 116,000 for the Continent.
