ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, April 20. The trial of Mrs Adelaide Bartlett, for poisoning her husband by administering chloroforms, was concluded today, when the jury acquitted the prisoner. The s.s. Tongariro arrived at Plymouth this morning. Her meat is in good condition. Her Majesty’s Government has assented to the proposal put forward by the Khedive that he should despatch a delegate to Wady Haifa in order to treat with the rebel Arabs for a cessation of hostilities. April 21. In consequence of opposition, the cable rates between England and America have been reduced to 6d per word. A desperate attempt has been made by the rebels in Burmah to destroy the town of Mandalay by fire. Fortunately the British garrison had sufficient warning to prevent the attempt proving successful. The Orient Company will tender for the carrying of the mail under the new federal service. It is believed that an attack on the Turks by the Greeks is imminent, and that Russia is doing her best to hamper the Powers, San Francisco, April 20. The Alameda arrived here from Auckland on the 18th inst,, and the Msraroa left for New Zealand on the 18th inst, at 8 p.m. Athens, April 20. The troops composing the garrison of this city have been ordered to proceed to the frontier. AUSTRALIAN GABLE. Melbourne, April hi. A fire occurred to-day on the premises of Greenlands, boatbuilder, resulting in damage being done to the extent of £2OOO. Sixty boats were destroyed. The fruit shipped to England by the John Elder is reported to have arrived in excellent condition. Sydney, April 21. It has been ascertained that the catastrophe at Lithgow colliery was not due to an explosion of firedamp, as at first supposed, but to an immense fal in the workings in the pit.
